Advanced Micro Devices Inc. projected a sharp drop in first-quarter revenue and announced a 10% reduction in its work force, as technical gaffes and softening computer demand afflicted the chip maker.

The job cuts will affect about 1,680 workers at the Sunnyvale, Calif., company, which previously employed 16,800, an AMD spokesman said.

AMD, locked in a battle with Intel Corp. over chips known as microprocessors, said it expects first-quarter revenue of $1.5 billion, about 15% lower than the company reported in the fourth period. The company previously had predicted a decline in line with normal seasonal patterns. The AMD spokesman said a decline of about 7% is typical for the period.

They need to get lean and mean again. And they need to understand we're willing to buy their processors if they are either cheap, fast, or both.

They got fat from the AMD64 days it seems... the Phenom was their P4 EE series.

that could end up being a good thing. the 9x series of nvidia cards isn't showing BIG gains....

Making the ATI card a performer in terms of cash pumped in.

I dont see that happening anytime soon quite frankly. Not only did they pay a heavy premium for ATI but nvidia now a direct competitor instead of basicly an ally.

I always thought AMD had a strong relationship with nvidia and that it helped them against Intel. Oh well, what do I know.

they were apparently AMDs first pick but for whatever reason had to settle for ATI.

rofl, with intel expanding its r+d, this just puts more talented people on the job market for intel to snatch up. talented people with a personal insight in to how AMD does business. i predict the company will tank within 5 years unless they innovate significantly

The industry would probably black list them for it.
