If I was to carry just the 3.5" HDD on a plane, would it be better off in a carry on or in my luggage? Any suggestions for packaging other than bubble wrap?

prolly in your luggage unless it has important data. mainly just get an anti static bag and put it in with the clothes you bring along should cushion from shock.

Interesting..

When i've carried my laptop on a plane, I've been asked to turn it on to show that it's a working lappy - not a bomb.

No idea how they'd check a HDD - other than just stick it through the bomb sniffer?

You're supposed to reply to them with, "I can't turn my laptop on, it's actually a bomb."
