Hello, wieners.

I made a video about a year ago. It's nothing fancy. I just felt like making a video that wasn't all MAs.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm considering making another.

A bit of background.

I didn't make this vid to show off or anything. I know I’m not great. I made it to document some of the different gameplay mechanics of Tribes for wiener kids that were in my programming class. Kids thinking Halo and CS are the most difficult games in the world.

I started playing online games with Quake 2 back in '97. I played Tribes a lot for about 2 years right from when it came out, not seriously or in a clan. I stopped playing games almost altogether after being massively disappointed with Tribes 2 and shooters in general degenerated into pointy-clicky WWII pseudo-simulations.

When I got a new PC at the end of '05 I decided to try a few newer games. I came across UT2k4 and had a lot of fun with that for a few weeks. But one day it got really annoying and I realized the only things I liked about it were the parts that reminded me of Tribes. So I found an old backup disc and discovered lasthope and hudbot and all that. I fell in love with Tribes all over again.

From that point I would play it for about a month at a stretch, then stop entirely for a few months. I've been playing regularly for about a year now. I went back to it trying to think of it in terms of verbs and looking at the gameplay mechanics, trying to articulate to myself what I like so much about it, because I want to make games myself.

This is crap taken from the roughly 3 months I played it intensively around this time last year.

While it wasn't incredibly impressive, I couldn't help but think this would be a good demonstration about what tribes is about. I see that was your goal, and to that end I think you did a good job.

Actually I quite liked it. Unlike many of the pimp my ego vids that just focus on how many MA's someone shot or caps they grabbed it gives someone who has never played a general idea of the "fun" that is Tribes gameplay.

Thanks for the comments.

I think trying to capture the "fun" of Tribes is what I was going for with this video. That's a good observation.

I've been half-assedly writing a paper on game design theory for a long time now that revolves around the core mechanics of shooters.

What I'm thinking of doing next is more a series of videos documenting all of the possible "moves" and "techniques" at the individual player level in these games, focusing on the three major shooter variations: Quake, Tribes, and dirty, dirty CS.

I'd be trying to bring to bare and quantify all the little actions players perform and the reasons they perform them without consciously acknowledging them as separate actions or bothering to assign them a name.

1. The Stooges - Search and Destroy
2. David Bowie - Suffragette City
3. The Clash - Rock the Casbah
