Minstrel 04-03-2008, 05:46 PM When I play a live show, I have people come up and tell me I kick ass. I don't think I am very good at all. My knowledge of theory is severely lacking, my technique is a bit fucked up compared to the way I see other guitarists play. I have 15 years of stage experience and I do consider myself a professional. I do not think I am an expert though.
People I consider to be experts are people like Alvarez and old_skul, and Alekhine, people who have a broad knowledge of theory but also play tastfully. I would give my left nut to know as much as they do. Myself, I just close my eyes and let my fingers do the walking. I don't use to much theory knowledge because I don't know any of it well enough to use it in real time.
It is like sight readers. These fuckers amaze me, to sit there and play while reading a piece of music is totally beyond my comprehension.
sigh

Totally agree with this.

Stilgar 04-03-2008, 06:53 PM I can learn something from anyone...including assfrags.
There will ALWAYS be someone that knows more or can play better.
Turn on the radio and I'd bet half of us can play/write better shit.
The trouble is, we're posting here and some schmuck with a name like P Diddy has our bitches and monies.

Theres plenty to learn from me. !

Alvarez 04-04-2008, 07:03 AM Thanks for the kudos! Expert comes from "experience" so I consider an expert someone with a lot of experience in some technique/style/or any area.
You can go with the guide that knows the area like the back of his hand or you can go with the guide who is an expert map reader and has all the maps.... I personally would go with the guy who wouldn't be lost if he misplaced his maps. Experience is crucial for performance, theory is crucial for good pay. I try to keep it as even as possible, but most musicians that I know favor one side or the other.
AniMisM 04-04-2008, 11:53 AM I agree with what has been said so far, but I also think that seeing someone as an expert can be in the eye of the beholder. Take Tom Morello for instance. By no means is he a shitty guitarist, but I personally feel he's been given far too much credit for his playing ability over the years. He's even a character in Guitar Hero 3 "Legends of Rock". C'mon, really?
Orestes 04-04-2008, 12:29 PM I consider myself an expert.
Bow before my greatness bitches.

I think its more about his tone.
AniMisM 04-04-2008, 04:26 PM He doesn't really have a "tone" per se, he heavily relies on effects to create his sounds. He comes up with some great stuff, but does that make him an expert? Not really imo, anyone can fuck with effects. Some of his newer solos are just noise that doesn't even go with the song. He tried something different with his solo project (Nightwatchman), but it was terrible for the most part.
Minstrel 04-04-2008, 04:43 PM See, I never really dug Rage just because of the fact that most of the guitar stuff is just filters, whether it be LFO or envelopes. I think it sounds noisy and not very musical.
assfrags 04-04-2008, 05:17 PM Noise is just as musical as musical music.
soggynuts 04-05-2008, 10:03 AM most of the time when people say they kick ass, they sucks ass
and most of the people who do kick ass at playing guitar play it down because part of what makes you good is having that never ending quest to become better. That being said, I am really a terrible guitar player, and im not just saying that, i really am. but I love it anyways so whatevs

OMG someone who sees eye to eye with me on this! I posted this on the main forum and got ripped to shreds over it. IMO Morellos nightwatchmen was almost all shit. He was innovative and great with Rage's 1st album up till Evil Empire.
From there he has had some good songs as far as song writing but his playing, innovativeness, and tone are nowhere to be found anymore. :( sad sad sad... Its like he lost his identity as a guitarist.

wrong. i played cello for 7 years and i could read bass clef pretty fucking well (ya hear?) but sightreading is a skill that requires attention by itself.
