Your specs come into play for 2 reasons: 1. is it gives us an idea of your knowledge and understanding so we know how to help accordingly.. 2. if we know your hardware/software specs it can help especially if your were running WinME on an 8 year old HP computer or a new gen rig; and allot of things could come into play and 'if' we are familiar with the problematic software[I should have picked up on the XP in your title and tips & tricks reference in your OP]...

Who is your network provider and is this a home PC??

Having a router gives you NAT protection which is pretty good at keeping the bad guys out initially unless you have it set-up for MSN or any other web browser/OE/connection to start upon boot-up ===> which you shouldn't so the chances of any trojan/virus walking in initially is pretty much nil 'unless' you picked-up a malicious one in your last/previous online adventures...

We appreciate that you do keep us updated and informed; allot of posters here don't....

Network provider is T-Online, yes this is a home PC.
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
ECS Elitegroup K7S5A
1x1 GB 400 Mhz Samsung DDR
Realtek RTL8139 PCI Ethernet card
and the Goddamned D-Link DSL-360R modem

All in all though, it looks like I'm gonna have to buy a router, unless the Tips and Tricks thread comes to the rescue. When tech support tells you to "maybe Google for the solution, or post in forums", you really begin to feel special.

Oh, and when I said "MSN auto connects", I meant Miranda IM auto connects to MSN. There are no browsers involved.

I heard lores of potent magicks with which the ADSL connection can be set up as a system service, so it will hopefully start at logon. If that and the Trips&Tricks thread fails, I'm just going to buy a fucking router and throw a LAN party for 3 friends. What sucks though, is that buying their router was optional. Not that I could have guessed they'd give me a lobotomized D-Link, an abomination lashed together by rank psychopats. Whatever.

Thanks everyone, chances are we'll meet again in the "recommend a good router" thread I'm likely to make.
