I put locking tuners on my old LP Studio Lite about a year ago and it helped with tuning. I decided to try a teflon / graphite nut for the heck of it.
Got the TREM-NUT slotted jumbo from someone on ebay for $7.
Getting the old nut out was as easy as the instructions said. Fitting the new one took a bit of time to sand it down. I left it higher than my previous nut and it really affected the action in a bad way, so I decided to shape it closer to my original (bone?) nut.
After 20 minutes of sanding, I got it to where I wanted it. I used some old strings to file the low E slot to fit the .52s I use.
I still didn't glue it in yet, because I may lower it, but I really like it. It has helped my tuning very much. My strings don't waver around tuning-wise. They pretty much get to tune and hold. The lockers helped with that and now this new nut really helps tuning.
PS - You can do as I did and leave it unglued. The strings hold it in very nicely. Once you decide that you like the height, then glue it.
If I did it over again, the one thing I'd do different is to make a jig so I can grind the new nut down square. I had to square it up as the 2nd to the last step in the sanding process.
I highly recommend trying this if you don't have one on your guitar.
Here's the kind of nut I got:
Trem-Nut; the self-lubricating nut with TONE! (http://www.graphtech.com/tremnut_info.php) (LP Gibson Slotted Jumbo)
The exact nut for Gibson LP or SG: http://estore.graphtech.com/gti/aquarius/Itemdesc.asp?CartId={15B2 2547-7A9B-43C3-80EVEREST2D-55BCCEEB6E97}&ic=PT%2D6010%2D00&eq=&Tp=
Here's the instructions to remove / install:

has anyone replaced their nut and had good results? I have to think that the stock nut I had sucked at this point, considereing how much better the tuning is now...
