Durka 03-20-2008, 11:59 AM WHEY* sorry.
As a meal replacer? (So I can fit in 5 meals as opposed to 3)
Before/After workout supplement?
Am I buying the right kind? (GNC 100% Whey Protein)
Do I need to get that MEGA WHEY bs?
Do I need weight gainer? (5'7" 132#) or will working out w/ this supplement do the job?
kicker 03-20-2008, 12:04 PM first off.. it's WHEY.... and if you're trying to gain weight you should be getting AT LEAST 1 gram of WHEY for every pound you weigh.
I myself prefer BSN's protein (syntha-6). It's the best tasting protein i've had, second to that i'd probably go with ISO pure.
Again, if you're trying to gain weight i don't suggest using it as a meal replacer. You need blah.. forget it ... search.
Durka 03-20-2008, 12:06 PM As I've already stated clearly: Whey, sorry. (Good job thanks)
I'm not looking to solely gain weight. I want to bulk up also.
I also need a supplemental shake because I work and only have time for 3 meals. Need something quick.
Also.. 1g/lb? Not so sure about that.. I've been told you can only absorb about 30g... eh?
GNC is overpriced but whey protein is pretty much all the same. It's fine for a meal replacement when trying to gain weight ... just about everything is, although I'm not sure if it will be high enough in calories alone to meet your needs.
I drink my protein in the morning every day since I'm coming off a long fast (sleep). I don't feel there is a benefit from drinking protein in the immediate term surrounding your workout, although I do sometimes put a 1/4 scoop (7g) in my PWO which is water and maltodextrin.
You do not need a weight gainer, you'd be better served by whole foods with lots of calories at your weight to add bulk. Weight gainers don't have anything in them but empty calories and maybe some vitamins in them usually, and you need nutrition. Also make sure you are not neglecting your lower body (squats, deadlifts) in your workout if you are looking to add overall bulk.
MistaKe 03-20-2008, 12:30 PM Mega Whey is only gonna help you out if you're lifting like twice a day.
If you're just starting out with the gym thing, don't buy the Mega stuff - it's more expensive and the other, less protein filled stuff will suffice.
Good luck.
The Bear 03-20-2008, 01:26 PM You need 1g of protein per pound of body weight a day to gain muscle.
Yes it will help you bulk and yes its good for meal replacements just make sure you get all your protein in a day that you need.132-150 grams of protein a day is good.
Durka 03-20-2008, 02:34 PM I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In between those I've started eating my whey shakes (1 banana, 1 cup whole milk, 1 scoop whey (20g protein), 4 ice cubes)
Also, what is better than GNC? (since it's overpriced)
MistaKe 03-20-2008, 02:41 PM I think Rayn's mentioned a site by the name of allthewhey.com, or something.
I get my whey, multivitamins, and protein bars from GNC. Yeah, it's a bit overpriced, but it's like right down the road, so fuck it.
Radon006 03-20-2008, 02:50 PM Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard
Twi$ta 03-20-2008, 03:53 PM I bought a five pound bag of EAS whey at Sams Club for like $30, I always drink a shake right after I finish lifting
I have used allthewhey.com and optimum nutrition 100% gold. I thought strawberry from allthewhey was awesome but cookies and cream from ON is amazing. I had to switch to ON cause it has lactase in it, and apparently I have a real problem with that much whey (dairy product)
it wasn't pretty. I just use froogle.com and search for whomever has it cheapest online.
Fuzzy 03-20-2008, 04:31 PM get the weight gainer you little fucker
DarKSouL_BC 03-20-2008, 07:01 PM Ryan how many scoops of the maltodextrin do you take in after a workout? like 1g per lb that you weigh?
Also do any of you guys take anything extra in your PWO shake to promote a faster insulin spike, say like honey or something or is the carb shake enough to bring on a insulin spike?
DropSquad 03-20-2008, 08:10 PM 1 g per lb is a bit over kill. maybe more like a g per kg. Also, you better not be taking a g per kg of whey because thats just sick. Eat some fish, tuna, peanut butter, etc to get those extra grams of protein.
Whey should be a supplement! People don't understand that food comes first, all this extra shit is just that, EXTRA. You should not be substituting whole meals with "meal replacement' shit.
DarKSouL_BC 03-20-2008, 08:23 PM maltodextrin = carbs yo .. I only take 30g's of whey after I workout.
45g malto PWO. Some people say you need a lot more, but I just can't imagine taking in that many carbs 4 times a week .......
Chimera 03-22-2008, 11:47 AM No offense but sometimes I wish I was smaller. I'm 6'1" 195 lbs. Easting nearly 200g of protein a day is hard. Be much easier to eat 120g not to mention cheaper.
edit: and DropSquad is right. Chicken breast, turkey, fish, skim milk, lean steak. You'd be suprised how much protein you can get if you eat right. 4 egg whites, black beans, low fat cheese, and a whole wheat wrap will get you like 30'ish grams of protein not to mention all the other nutrients.
DropSquad 03-22-2008, 09:15 PM No offense but sometimes I wish I was smaller. I'm 6'1" 195 lbs. Easting nearly 200g of protein a day is hard. Be much easier to eat 120g not to mention cheaper
i'm 6'3 and would like to be at 200 eventually. There is really no reason to be eating 200g or protein a day. I'd say thats overkill. 150 is probably more than enough. And once you are happy with where you are and not bulking anymore you could tune that down even more
I can't image trying to get 200g of protein a day (6' 200lb)
Chimera 03-23-2008, 10:45 AM Oh I can't. That's the point. I'm happy when I get 150. 200g of protein is about 800 calories right there. I've actually been laxed on my diet/workout the past couple of weeks (damn you WoW!).
