TAA WAR 03-15-2008, 03:43 PM Yesterday I was doing squats when all of a sudden I felt this sharp pain in my side. I stopped immediately and went home, and it still hurts pretty bad now.
I have no idea what I did, and it only hurts bad in certain situations. Like when I cough or exhale really hard it hurts, and when I was trying to sleep in certain positions hurts. It hurts on my left side of my body if you were to go under my nipple a couple inches and to the left a couple inches where my ribs are. Could it have something to do with my lungs? I had this pain before about a month ago but it went away after taking a few days off. May get a doctors appointment if it continues past monday.
I had a pain like this very deep in my chest I thought was my lungs. It turns out I had strained a very deep part of my pectoral. I would guess you pulled something deep, I pulled a middle trap squatting because of using my back to hold up all that weight.
I don't know how you could do it, but the pain your are indicating is in this area:
Serratus Anterior (http://www.exrx.net/Muscles/SerratusAnterior.html)
It's probably just a muscle strain and you'll need to rest it.
TAA WAR 03-15-2008, 04:12 PM Yeah that is exactly where the pain is. I'm thinking it is the muscle because it acted up about a month ago. It starting hurting when I was going up on the squat, so I'm not sure what is going on. Before it hurt a day later rather than during the exercise.
Could you hurt that muscle during bench? I was doing bench right before my squat, and maybe the squat pushed it over the edge or something.
Plasma 03-16-2008, 01:54 AM I've had a full on headache (Later researched and identified them to be "exersion headaches") when doing squats - this is years back.
It was because I didn't breathe correctly in a few of the squats I did, causing the blood flow up my neck to be constricted and give me a massive instant shot of pain that lasted a few minutes.
Be sure you are breathing correctly :)
I was going to say, you are breathing incorrectly. I am very guilty of it. I always get headaches from holding my breath. Oops.
TAA WAR 03-16-2008, 02:51 PM It was feeling almost ok by the time I was done working. Just woke up, and it feels like shit. Should I try icing it or what?
Thumper 03-17-2008, 11:41 PM If its a deep pull, there really isn't much you can do except let it heal. If you must work out, take it easy for a few weeks and let your body recover. Pushing it now will only make it worse.
I've had this happen several times to my lower abs, it feels like a hernia but it isn't. I get them from straining while benching. I never let it heal right and now it plagues me pretty much every time I work out.
Radon006 03-21-2008, 12:18 AM I've got an annoying little strain in my back currently. Sucks because I can't push myself on any lifts really, without making it sore.
Been a bother for a couple months now, but I'm hoping taking it easy on lifting for a few weeks will get rid of the damn thing.
Also I notice doing squats that my ears kinda get fucked up when I push myself hard. It's a bit like they're pressurizing/depressuririzing similar to the sensations from a change in altitude. I don't get the headache you guys are talking about, but I wonder if it's due to a major exertion.
I do get a headache for about 30 minutes after HIIT, and I also get a headache if I hit heavy on a punching bag.
the more you know.

The same thing happens to me whenever I workout with my one friend who is a boxer/trainer. He pushes me really hard and it gets to the point where it it feels like my ears are all clogged up. Not sure what the hell thats all about.
But yeah I am having this annoying pain that randomly rares its head when I wake up, or when I make a sudden movement or breath, while other times its fine. Was thinking about working out tomorrow which would be a week break, but after hearing the stories I may wait it out another week. It sucks because I was making really good progress.

Get yourself a lifting belt, it takes a little bit of the stress off of your abs and back.

90% of the time people start up too soon after and injury and prolong it/make it worse.. Actually probably more often than that.
edit: as for lifting belt I always felt like I shouldn't use one because my back strength wouldn't keep up with the rest of my body. Not sure if that's true or not, but unfortunately right now the pain is further up than a belt would be, around my middle back just below my right shoulder blade.
the problem with your ears is that you are popping them by forcing air up through your sinuses as you strain.

That is where my pain is too. Its not major pain, I would say moderate.
So the real question is, is how long should I rest it? I iced it for about 15 minutes today and it seems to make things feel a lot better for the time being.
TAA WAR 03-24-2008, 09:56 AM I played basketball yesterday and I am in a shitload of pain now. Every time I breath it hurts, and whenever I try to sleep I can't lay straight down, but rather on my side. This fucking sucks...probably going to have to postpone anything for 6 weeks or so.
