Minstrel 02-25-2008, 09:11 AM Who else digs jamming when you are stoned?
I find I get more inventive in my phrasing amd technique after I am ripped.
My old drummer used to love for me to get real stoned cause then I would play more off the drums, accenting with him and such, said I am a much more dynamic player when I am stoned.
assfrags 02-25-2008, 11:45 AM You just think you are.
Minstrel 02-25-2008, 11:57 AM no, that would be me drunk.
Excommunicated 02-25-2008, 12:44 PM the first time i ever made a background track and then solo'ed over it and thought to myself afterwards "wow, that actually sounds good" i was very very stoned
have to be careful not to use it as an excuse to be high a lot though
Stilgar 02-25-2008, 12:57 PM Smoking yes, drinking - no.
Numbing Thud was written under the influence.
;)
Orestes 02-25-2008, 03:35 PM Smoking - yes, drinking - yes
Smoking and drinking at the same time - no, please go directly to the nearest toilet.
Smoking bud is definatlely condusive to creative play for me.
Alchohol makes playing more entertaining, but fucks up my finger dexterity, and doesn't necessarily add any creative influence.
I get baked and play almost every night :)
Alekhine 02-25-2008, 05:19 PM Already mentioned it in IRC, but I like being high when I'm improvising or composing, but can't play at all well if I'm playing classical or already-composed music. There are just too many things to keep track of correctly if I'm buzzed up on anything, including caffeine, and my fingers just can't keep up with it all.
AniMisM 02-25-2008, 05:33 PM If you feel you get more creative and more inventive with your techniques when you're high, then would you play stoned live to "enhance" your show? Although I like to smoke when I jam and write, I'm strict when it comes to playing for an audience. It's important to me to play a tight set, and 30-minute jam odysseys are generally frowned upon unless you're the main act.
Orestes 02-25-2008, 05:45 PM I usually play shows sober, though once I can actually drink at the places I'd be playing I'll probably have at least a small buzz.
Though really the rush of performing in front of people is better than anything else.

I'm with you on this one. I really can't get high or drunk live and still do my best at all. I especially don't like talking to people after a show if I'm high, and I absolutely hate doing Real Book jams fucked up, even though that is largely improv. (It's still reading, which requires some concentration.)
I like to get high and plink around or write and that's about the extent of it. Part of the reason it works in that circumstance is because I'm alone for one, and I also experiment sometimes more, but I'm definitely not in the "it makes me more creative" camp, as much as those two things might appear to be at odds with each other. Experimentation and good creative quality aren't necessarily the same thing.
Fat Steve 02-25-2008, 07:24 PM i tend to play better while stoned. it helps me loosen up and not overthink everything which allows creativity to play a larger part.
Orestes 02-25-2008, 07:41 PM Lets all go get stoned.

It so depends on the gig and the material your doing.
Some really tight, written piece, sure.
Doing a night of Santana covers was the perfect excuse to blaze on stage.
Fonzie 02-27-2008, 01:58 AM Playing drunk is sweet, but not too drunk or it's sloppy.
