Researchers in Australia have managed to circumvent full drive encryption systems by chilling the memory of a powered computer in order to dump the memory and analyze it to find the raw text encryption keys. This method requires physical access to the powered device and can be prevented by using another keys stored on some portable medium, like a USB drive or smart card. Or, a person can just not leave a secure machine unattended for the minute or so it takes to guarantee all the data leaks out of memory.
