Who were the idiots telling me that landing on your heel is ok as opposed to landing on the ball of your foot for jogging and walking?

The weak arch is commonly a result of misaligned ankle bones.

don't hurt your heal

if you bruise that shit it can take years to heal (assuming it you're young enough that it will actually heal, my dad did this jogging when he was 45 and he still has pain)
