ZodiaK 01-30-2008, 07:03 PM We all read these things or hear these things looking in musclefag and hanging out in gyms:
"if you want to get rid of love handles you have to do hyperextensions"
"[if you want to lose weight you must] eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and supper like a pauper"
"there's no such thing as overtraining, just under-eating and under-resting"
Leg presses are as beneficial as squats.
"I don't need cardio I'm just trying to tone up"
Pushups with a backp.....oh wait....reputable.
Raven 01-31-2008, 12:15 PM Leg presses are as beneficial as squats.
hahahahaha
the famous "getting lean is more about targeting muscle groups then cardio"
DropSquad 01-31-2008, 01:38 PM you CAN'T target different parts of a muscle by doing different kinds of exercises.
eg. hammer curls, vs preacher curls etc etc. or Upper pec vs lower pec
TeckMan 02-01-2008, 01:51 AM you can target different parts of a muscle by doing different kinds of exercises.

lol but you can dude...
certain exercises put more stress on certain fibers of the muscle than others. Do bicep curls with wide grip then close grip tell me it's the same move...
or even more laughable, do decline dumbell chest press then incline.
Why do more than one exercise if they all hit the muscle the same?
DrSupey 02-01-2008, 03:08 AM You can hold your breath more efficiently if you hyperventilate your lungs with oxygen and blow off carbon dioxide, therefore extending the amount of time you can hold your breath without your chemoreceptors noticing the build-up of carbon dioxide in your blood.
Oh wait...

wow could not be more wrong...
are you telling me that you could do sittups that make you "upper" abs bigger and sittups that make you "lower" abs bigger? Well the answer to that is no, go ask anyone who knows about anatomy.
The reason for different grips/ exercises is it targets different muscle GROUPS, don't different parts of the muscle.
gRraWr 02-01-2008, 01:16 PM Leg presses are as beneficial as squats.
 this is the winner so far.
"I don't need cardio I'm just trying to tone up"
meh maybe they want to gain some muscle and don't care about the little extra fat they have (duh, fat is healthy)

i don't know enough about this but it would be nice to see a source if you're going to say something like that. i mean aren't people's lower abs different than their upper abs.
and mine:
steroids cause cancer

if you truly believe what you're saying, do decline bench and no other sort of bench press and see what your chest ends up looking like
and "there's no such thing as overtraining, just under-eating and under-resting" is actually true
Whoohoox8 02-03-2008, 05:55 PM this thread is confusing
ZodiaK 02-04-2008, 04:29 PM and "there's no such thing as overtraining, just under-eating and under-resting" is actually trueit's pretty fucking false.
put down your musclefags and read something substantial.
BeLiaL 02-04-2008, 05:31 PM it's pretty fucking false.
put down your musclefags and read something substantial.
Can you explain how it's false, or are you just going to demand I explain how it's true? I will if you do.
It's all about recovery time.

The most important thing to understand about this debate is that it is completely irrelevant. We are in complete agreement that you need to do more than one exercise for each muscle group which is the practical side of this argument. The reason why is a technical issue which I am obviously correct on but it still doesn't matter.
As far as overtraining, it is semi-correct that there is only under-resting and poor nutrition. UNLESS you have crossed into the threshold of an injury. Of course there is a huge gray area between injury and "effective micro-trauma". As long as you have really good form I wouldn't worry about overtraining but I would definitely make sure you have adequate rest (a full week on a given muscle group is almost always enough) and nutrition. Now a full week's rest means 7 days of 8 hours+ sleep a night, and not over using those muscles during daily activity. If you have to do even light lifting at work (stocking etc) and only get 6-7 hours, then you might need to ease up in the gym as you might not be recovering in a full week and I think it would be detrimental to spread your workouts out more than a week. On the other hand I know a guy with insomnia that works out like a maniac, so I think your body can adapt eventually.

There's a machine in the gym I go to that can change between a squat and a leg press, like this one:

Would that type of squat get me the same result as using a barbell squat?
