News: Revealed! Valve's major TF2 changes - ComputerAndVideoGames.com (http://www.computerandvideogames .com/article.php?id=180237&site=cvg)

PC Gamer's got a load of new info on the major changes coming to Team Fortress 2, which Valve teased us with earlier this month.

Referred to as a 'large-scale modification' by the developer, it turns out it's unlockable weapons that are set to be made available to each of the game's nine classes.

It'll roll out first for the Medic, which will receive two new items, but Valve will then gradually introduce unlocakbles to the remaining class roster.

"These will be alternative versions of their current loadouts that, once unlocked by earning a certain number of achievements, you can pick and choose from on a new 'Loadout' menu", PC Gamer UK explains.

It continues, "The unlockables aren't just beefed up versions of the weapons, they balance major advantages and disadvantages to fundamentally alter the role of that class.

"The first Medic unlock, for example, is called the Overhealer.Instead of temporarily buffing people's health to 50 percent above their normal maximum, it permanently boosts them to double their standard health. The downside is that it'll be dramatically worse at building Ubercharge - in fact, Valve are toying with not letting it Uber at all."

Details on the Medic's second unlock are scarce, but it's said it'll be another healing ray that alters the way the class plays.

The first unlock is earned by acquiring half of the thirty-five new Medic achievements, the second for acquiring them all. So a bit like Call of Duty 4 multiplayer then?

As for the new game mode, that's currently un-named but it'll feature in Goldrush, a second new map that will release with the already-revealed re-worked version of TFC map Badlands.

PC Gamer explains, "One team must escort a small mining cart through a series of Dustbowl-like map segments. The cart moves faster the more Blue players are near it, but stops entirely if even one Red player is in range. Blue have to escort the cart all the way to Red's headquarters within a certain time limit".

why would they change the game so much?

My guess is to improve the competitive aspect of the game, which at the moment is heavily based on the uber mechanic, and is also endangered by the sometimes game-deciding critical hits. The new medic gun should make a heavy or soldier survive all crits with the exception of backstabs and headshots.

I seriously doubt they're doing it for the competitive aspect. Valve has said a number of times that their focus is on making this a fun game for pubs.

The monkey is correct.

Yea, I think TF2 would be an outstanding game if they ditched crits.

Any idea when this update will be out?

Actually stopped playing that game about a month back. Started up yesterday after I read this thread. Game is still fun, and crits are still gay. Why don't they stop being gay.

lol @ this for competition

if anything this makes it WORSE

valve took everything i hate about wow and put it into an FPS. Paladin bubbles, rep grinds, a critical strikes.

next thing you know you'll have to play for x amount of hours to earn 'resilience' for your account that decreases crit damage

There is no competition, the 'competiton' destroyed itself by making up stupid limits and telling everyone 'how to play'

Yeah, I can admit I'm wrong on the competition aspect. It was just wishful thinking on my part.

Unlocks are the epitome of gay.

Unlocks are the epitome of gay.

I agree.
...
But who knows. It could be fun.
...
Not that many people know what that is.
...
Since most people think 'fun' is playing a map 24/7.

Exactly. Not that I'm anything close to a competitive, but you think you'd let competition happen for *at least* a few months without limiting classes and making up rules to see if people can develop counters to the best perceived combination of classes.

limits to classes = good
if you didn't limit the classes no scouts would ever get recruited and every match would be 4 solds 3 medics 1 demo in 8v8 and probably 3solds 2 meds 1 demo for 6v6
