They are but you can't get shit done without them. Play a shadow priest if anything.

If you are going all the way to 70....a prot pally would be ideal imo. Unless the warrior leaves arms to go prot he will have a hard time tanking at 70. With a prot pally many instances become trivial with the aoe tanking abilites.

shadow priest. DPS/Shackle/Mana Battery and shadow weakness to up the lock.

Are you just talking about in general, or are you planning on doing a 5v5 arena setup with them?

That makes a big difference.

Go with a shaman then. It'll be cake leveling up since you can do it as enhancement, and when they do need you to heal, you get earthshield, chain heal, and about 9 billion totems to keep things interesting.

If your plan is just to have a 5 man group, I'd go with a prot pally or feral druid for tanking @ 70. The arms warrior isn't gonna cut it then.

Pally. For PvE, you're going to want a rezzer and maybe a dispel. Shadow priest can do this but you don't have the option of going tank if your warrior doesn't want to.

I agree. Pally.

It seems to me like Pallys would be better tanks than warriors cus they can beef up their group with blessing of kings right?

That's food for thought. Maybe I should roll a pally over a warrior? Hrmmm....

I would refrain from a pally for the first toon if you are new to the game for the following reasons.

1. You'd pretty much have to go Ret from 1 - 58 (or 60) because there is literally no pally gear until Blackrock Depths and GL finding regular groups for that.

2. If you try for Holy or Prot you won't be able to tank or heal as well as others from 1 - 58/60 because not only because of lack of said gear but everyone else will have gear to help their own healing

3. Tanking as a pally requires a bit more thought than warrior/druid tanking. Simply because your threat generation is by and large based on your ability to dole out Holy damage. And given the lack of +spellpower mail/plate until Outlands it would be a lot harder to tank until then.

Pallies are fun and if you spec what your realm needs more in outlands you'll have no problems getting groups. But for a first-timer put the paladin on the back burner. Wait until you get a general idea of how the game mechanics work and then come back as a pally.

Pallies 58 - 70 are fun, from 1- 57 though you're pretty much speccing Ret and grabbing warrior armor/weapons.

i would never level a paly to 60...let alone 70 again.

but i played a play at release, and they fucking sucked hard then.

roll a shadow priest for reasons Fool posted

I leveled a paly 1-70 as holy and my second one 1-70 as prot, prot is great dps when soloing and you have reckoning and you don't have to worry about stopping because you don't take much damage, you can always use blessing of wisdom for the little bit of mana you actually use to heal yourself after a fight.

With that group a prot paly would work fine, only thing is you and the dps warrior will be going for the same gear, skip all the spell damage gear and get pieces that help your melee damage and tanking pieces. When you hit 70 probably the only piece of gear you will have with spell damage on it for tanking is your weapon, and for that you can just buy the crystal forge sword and keep that until you get a arena weapon or the punisher from ZA (if you go that far).

But in the end play what you have fun playing or you will just end up dropping the character anyways.

Yea I'm levelling a prot paly right now and the only problem with it DPS wise is keeping a good weapon. Get a fast 1h Blue and you're set.
