Dialup and TF2

Does anyone actually know of anybody who plays TF2 on dialup? I've got a friend who can't get any kind of better connection (he lives in bumfuck, tennessee) and I figured he might be able to at least play Engineer or maybe a medic.

Is this possible?

Yeah,he can play with up to a 300 ping. My connect was hosed for a few months in the evenings and I was able to do OK with 300 ping. Tell your friend to play demoman and focus on stickies, I found they were easy to play with high ping.

Yeah, I've not seen that in any servers yet myself, but I do remember some doing it in 2142.

I play TF2 on dialup. You're best suited to playing medic, engineer, or demoman.

The hardest thing is finding a server to play on. Lots autokick for ping over 200 or something. Most servers I've tried has a minrate setting of 10000 or more, which floods out anyone on dialup (need a rate setting of 2000-3500). Luckily I play on a private server and told them to change the setting for me.

I've actually seen a lot of servers that have a max ping of like 80, which always pisses me off. I've got a pretty solid cable line here, and I can get like an 8 ping to any Toronto server which is great. Assume though for a minute that I want to play with some west coast friends and *gasp* my ping might not be single digits anymore. I think we all remember playing quake with 300 pings (or higher) back in the day, personally I'm prepared to run around with a tenth of a second of lag in a game that undoubtedly uses a certain amount of prediction anyway. That oughta be my decision.

I can understand having a limit, but some of these server admins are just being retarded about it. I got auto-booted two weeks ago when my ping floated over 100 in a CA server - while I was in first place by a considerable margin. It's not like i was lagging out and screwing over my team, it spiked over 100 once and I was gone.

Stupid shit like that makes me miss Descent over Kali.
