Games for Windows had an interview with one of the TF2 people. They are making more maps and have plans to push 'everything'. The voice actors are back and they are recording more dialogue that will be pushed into the game at a later date.

Criticals were invented because 'in counter-strike, people would get 5 headshots in a row and talk about it for weeks.'

Yeah, didn't make much sense to me either.

I get 5 headshots in a row on a daily basis in CS, wtf.

I know where they come from. They are Holy-Shit or Remember-When Moments. The kind of thing that you recall back to memory sometime in future when talking about the game with your friends.

For example, I Remember-When;

I played a game of Counter-Strike Beta 2.x on a map named CS_Siege (the one with the underground parking garage). I was a defender and had the misfortune of being on a team who managed to get themselves all killed in first 90 seconds of the round. So it was just me, my PARA machine gun and a pain-train of 8 remaining enemy players, all barrelling towards me in the parkade.

Not looking good for me.

What the hell, blaze of glory and maybe atleast get 1 or 2. Well, the first group of 4 rounded the corner and I let go a short burst of fire at them while moving to cover from the hail of lead being sent my way.

The first round disected 3 heads in a line for 3 headshots with 1 bullet. :o OMGHI2ME!

The next 120 seconds of the round involve me John Rambo-ing 4 more guys with the PARA before finishing the round with the Glock and 1 more headshot.

I just won an 8 on 1 round of Counter-strike. That was all me baby. That was also 7-8 years ago, but I still remember it.

Remember-Whens and Holy-Shit moments keep you excited and talking about the game after you've stopped playing. They can stir nostolgia, like a few RtCW moments with friends on TRAM that make me want to play those moments all over again. Even though I don't enjoy CS anymore and won't play it, I still remember that one game of Siege back when CS was still fun to play.

Crits are awsome in pubs, match play might be nice to have it off. Ive wasted 7 guys as a heavy standing on the cp point. Crit shots can swing a bad team into a winning team in a flash.

That's a Remember-When Moment.

too bad they dont get rid of crits and nerf ubers

then the game might have had a chance in comp

yeah, don't understand why they never made a cvar for critical chances on/off. Some servers 'hacked' out the criticals, and it would be really easy to do.

I guess it's just a case of 'we want you to play this way, so fucking do it'.

I was playing CoD4 today

So I see like 6 people in a room, run in and shoot one of them in the face, the others notice me and start shooting but I am too swift for their slow reaction and I've already sprinted around back and come in behind them. I stab one of them, pick up his nade dropped by martyrdom, throw it and kill 2 more, then I shoot the rest and call in an air strike that gets me another 5 kills.

I'm that good.

And headshots to some extent actually required skill. Crits just happen randomly and get you a free kill.

I agree with removing Crits and how they effect the game, but at the same time you have to admit, no matter how illegitimate they are, there is some piece of me that gets a twisted little grin whenever one goes my way.

Pubs I can live with Crits because they add a unpredictale element at times that makes absolute nothing a for-sure thing. Nothing is at stake, nothign is on the line, shit happens and the round restarts. In Competition, you don't want random, uncontrolled events deciding the outcome of a contest. You want talents, planning and good decision making to decide the outcome.

I wholeheartedly disagree with Headhots. In TF2 they would not involve all that much more skill. It would however make some classes even more agressive then they are now. A Medics Needle gun would shred heavier "fighting" classes too easily. Scouts and Engineers would be too dangerous with their Pistols.

The game would become too much like Counter-Strike with too many outcomes being decided by who got a headshot first. I hate CS and stopped being a fan when the game revolved around headshots and not actual brainwork.

Where did I say TF2 should have headshots other than sniper?

And every weapon in the game has such huge spread that it would be just as much a matter of luck as crits are, just less often.

Or they are that bad.

CoD4 is more 'twitch' then TF2.

I actually like the crit system in TF2. A game doesn't always need to be played on a competative ladder to be fun. TF2 is mindless and I sort of like it that way. The stuff people complain about the most, the crit rockets and grenades, are almost always easilly avoidable. Hosing somebody off with a minigun or flamethrower and getting a crit or two really is barely noticable. If you're in a position to kill somebody with either, they're going to die even if it takes another half a second.

The only thing that's ever even kind of annoyed me is the scouts shotgun, but it's really not like they're a difficult class to kill so I'm really not going to cry about it.

Melee weapon crits are just fucking funny.

If you're going to have criticals on weapons with splash damage, SCALE THE FUCKING DAMAGE.
A crit rocket hits me in the face, fine, I'm dead. A crit rocket hits the wall behind me and brings me from full health to pushing daisies when normally it would've done like 3 damage is fucking retarded.

yea i hate how crit splash damage is the same as a direct hit
:(

if you are in range of a crit sticky or rocket blast radius bye bye

crits should go (altho I'll crit whore like the best of em), but uber's should not be nerfed.

this game sometimes comes close to pissing me off as much as bf2

but at least it runs smoothly and is well-programmed

The problem is that the knowledge that they are random destroys any feeling of accomplishment and stops any 'remember when' moments.

Killing 7 people with a bunch of crits isn't "WOAH, I GOT 7 PEOPLE!" - it's "meh, the dice gave me 7 free kills".

That's true for you, and many times for me too, but not for everyone. Even, as I said, though I acknowledge the random unmerited result, it can still give me an evil and twisted little grin sometimes. So, in some ways... mission accomplished I guess.

Last night I had a moment, I was being chased through Blue Base on 2fort (as a Red Medic) by a Blue Medic. Down the back ramp, hounded by needles flying past me I flew. I round the corner. I stop. I wait for my persuer to come barrelling by and then. CHA-CHING! AMBUSHED and shanked him clean through with the Bonesaw. Score. Beautiful. A glorious and well executed counter attack.

To be fair, I crit'd him with a Melee Attack that killed him. The result I was hoping for, the Critical was the cherry on top. However, not before he also Critical'd me... twice with his Needle Gun in the moment immediately preceeding the money shot the finished him off. I survived. He did not.

I wish I had a demo recording.
