And not more additions to Ice either. I play a fire mage and even though I'm not uber equipped, I still put out a decent amount of damage. Usually the top of the chart on small raids, in the top 5 on big raids. But the people above me are typically rogues and warlocks and the occassional warrior.
So what is the point of a fire mage? Isn't the point supposed to be unmitigated damage output? A glass cannon? Well I certainly feel the glass part. It's somewhat frustrating to see mages passed over for locks because they live longer, do more damage and bring more utility beyond food/water/sheep.
Doesn't help either that every caster related quest/rep reward seems to be for priests.
Yeah, I quit my fire mage a long time ago. (Well, I quit WoW a long time ago. Likely in no small part due to being a mage.)
Very poor survivability for a disproportionate amount of DPS potential.
I love being able to two hit yellows when soloing, but when it comes to grouping/PvP it's pretty frustrating.
placid 11-02-2007, 11:06 AM I am a rogue and I died to a felguard before I could kill a manaless warlock
I could've blown some cooldowns and killed him, but I kind of wanted it to happen so I could bitch about my atrocious gear, and shitfuck felguard faggots
That doesn't really have much to do with your thread, but yea, fire mages are shittastic
TseTse 11-02-2007, 11:18 AM It's funny, cuz i know healers who are sick of mages being on the top of dps and then crying when they die so fast in raids.
As my pally friend puts it... PUT ON SOME STAM - YOU CANT GO INTO BT WITH 6K HEALTH JUST FOR 2500 +DMG.
He exaggerates the point, but it's not entirely inaccurate.
Shoddy 11-02-2007, 11:20 AM I thought they were improving your coefficients or something in 2.3
Surge 11-02-2007, 11:31 AM mage is the most fun class in the game

I never pull agro unless it's a dumper
Feannag 11-02-2007, 11:53 AM Think rogues still need a lot more work. At least your abilities scale with level, I stopped using eviscerate a long time ago. Players 15 levels lower than you can still see and target you at 25 yards and we rely on blowing cooldowns in pretty much any fight versus other classes who just need to their normal abilities.
But yeah mages need it just as bad, Maybe Blizz just likes shitting on certain classes and just giving other classes all the cool shit (like hunters).
MistaKe 11-02-2007, 12:03 PM If you're looking to PvP as fire, don't get your hopes up obviously.
Sounds like you're doing it right when it comes to PvE and fire spec though.
I rely on blowing cooldowns in PvP too. Only mine aren't nearly as useful. Maybe when I can have 4 instant cast damage spells at 80 (PoM-Pyro, Fireblast, Blastwave, Dragon's breath). Couple that with combustion and 25% base crits and maybe I stand a chance at killing someone once every 3 minutes, assuming they don't have more than 10k health.
Ice mages survive a lot longer obviously, but they've been given so many boosts to damage recently that it's not much worse than fire. They burn through their mana faster, but there's very little reason to spec fire right now. Arcane only gets good when you start getting the later raid sets.
DeadlyRabbit 11-02-2007, 12:06 PM I had fun playing my mage up to heroics but I think I would rather have a lock for raiding.
The mage is great fun to burn something down in a few seconds, it was always a welcome change from playing my prot paly and healy priest.

I accept that fire is not a PvP build. Ice is the accepted PvP build. But if fire is the PvE build, and mages are meant to be the glass cannon of PvE damage, shouldn't it be unquestionable that they be the best sustainted DPS in the game in end game raids?
Warlocks never run out of mana and outdamage. Rogues are much better burst DPS and will live longer if they manage to pull agro, plus have more tools for escaping.
MistaKe 11-02-2007, 12:07 PM Yeah man, I hear you. Whenever my team sees a fire mage in the arena, it's a joke. It's such an easy burn and it's not too bad keeping up with the damage that he/she is throwing out. The only time it becomes a problem is if there's a fully-geared, T6 etc fire mage walking around. If they pop all their cooldowns, shit tends to get out of hand.
HaPpY 11-02-2007, 02:47 PM i fuckin rape on my frost mage but i admit it is one of the toughest and most frustrating (in pvp) classes to learn... but they can drop a player in pvp faster than anyone... and i tend to be on top of the charts in pve vs geared locks and locks, its a close race with warrs.
and ya fire mages = quick death in pve/pvp... i suggest rerolling frost before giving up.
they get buffed in 2.3 also

you'd be suprised at how much burst dmg a frost mage can put out with correct use of its elemental.... what most people dont realize is shatter will proc as long as the projectile is in the air meaning frostbolt followed lance will both proc even if the lance breaks the freeze.

fire mages tend to get their 15minutes of fame with the first round... next round it may as well be 5/4.
TseTse 11-02-2007, 04:49 PM I donno, our mages dominate our dps meters last i checked. I have been out of the raiding loop for a while, but that's my understanding.
xpdnc 11-03-2007, 08:39 AM Our raids all feature a combat/swords rogue as #1 (no surprise) and a BM Hunter as #2 (sometimes #1, depends on if we have a shaman for the rogue)
Locks don't even factor into it until 7-10
and we can only get one mage into the top 10, ever
Ddrakon 11-03-2007, 08:59 AM I love facing the AP/PoM/Pyro mages in Arena. Once that initial burst is gone, they're worthless.
