For years I have been using 10s but I thought I would start using heavies so I went out and bought some 12s thru 52s.

Im getting used to using them now. I didnt really like them at first but now Im starting to like them.

So what size strings you use?

I played heavier gauge for a while but have now gone back to 10's. They're the sweet spot, imo the best trade-off for heavy tones vs comfort.

I played 9's for years, but I switched to 10s about 3 years ago and the tone difference is incredible.

I've become really comfortable with 11s. I've been playing my bass a lot lately, so I don't even notice the rigidity of them.

10-52 = LTHB

I downtune a lot, and have been doing so a lot longer than some of these new metal bands have. DADGAD FTW

Kings X used to use drop D tuning and they have been around a long time. Not sure if they still are.

Rock Elixir 10 guage.

Jazz 11-12 GHS flat wound.

Country GHS Boomers 12's

New Metal gigs I play GHS Boomer 13's

I am all over the board really but I keep my different guitars in different tunings with different guages depending on the gig I need it for. In lessons I keep one in Eb, one in drop C, one in standard, and one in standard with a floyd rose.

Sabbath detuned before a LOT of bands.

They're probably my primary influence. I've been listening to their stuff since the 80s. They're fantastic.

Jimmy Page used a lot of drop D tunings back in the early 70s, which is where I got the DADGAD thing (listen to LZ IV, it's all over it). But the first song in Drop D I learned was some Rush song, and I forget right now. :)

Ty Tabor is a huge influence on my playing without a doubt. I have actually jammed with Ty and Doug years ago, and Ty is the one who actually got me really hooked on Mesa's. I had never been a huge tube fan because accuracy can be lost imo through tubes whereas solid state is extremely accurate. The trade off was never enough to make me go tube until I played the single and dual rectifiers.

Faith Hope Love is a good album. I liked them when they did more melodic shit. Seems like they got heavier after that album and lost the melodic/beatles side they had.

Page and Bonham were the shit. Their rhythms were the greatest. No two players compared to those guys as far as guitar play/drummer pair.

Ill hear a lot of those two in Tom Morrello and who ever the drummer is from Rage.

And thats a lot of guitars to keep up with Alvarez.

I rotate guitars a WHOLE lot. each guitar is a different part of me. I can play any style on any of them of course but I lean certain ways when I play certain guitars and some sound better in different applications. My schecter is my most versatile, my gibson is all jazz, Both of my sustainiac's scream progressive, my straycat is tuned to C with dimarzio's and it excels in nu metal to lamb of god type of stuff.

It makes it much easier in lessons to just grab a guitar already ready instead of wasting someones time while you spend the time trying to get the guitar drop tuned and holding tune.

Kings X is still together. Ty is doing the Xenu thing with Wally as well as Kings X. Doug coming out of the closet almost destroyed that band but I don't think he would still be doing music today had he not. Jerry's solo stuff still has a beatles touch to it in some songs.

I try to catch them whenever they come through. They're all great guys who take a lot of time after a show to hang out with everyone.

I met Ty for the first time after a show back in '90, before he had revealed what his secret amp setup was, and we talked gear. I was a pretty star-struck 20 year old, though, so I was a bit of a nerd :)

I'm still working on getting to a similar sound...back in the Gretchen days, he used a Gibson Lab Series L5. They're hard to find in good shape, but apparently that's what he used, just with a 4x12. He used to be really secretive about his tones, but since he made that first switch to Mesa amps (and now to Randall) he's very open with what he does.

There's a huge thread on Gearslutz with Michael Wagener, King's X's current producer, detailing their last recording, due out in springtime.

King's X was so under rated. In a time where so many hair bands were talentless clones, these guys stood out. I love them.
