I had to take some time off recently (almost a month) due to an injury. I'm a-okay to go back but I'm not sure how to start again. Should I start like I've never worked out before or do you think I'd be able to jump back into the schedule I was maintaining before? I plan on taking it a little easier (lower impact cardio, less weight when lifting), but should I go less often too? I normally go 4-6 times a week for a few hours depending on schedule.
Depends on what the injury was, how bad it was, and what your routine is.
You can probably go right back to what you were doing, but start off a litle lighter first. 1 or two weeks of it should get you into the groove.
ptavv 08-21-2007, 12:15 PM Getting back into your routine after an injury fucking blows.
But yeah, like SL84 said, we can't give you much advice based on just "an injury." Depends on what you did/how long you were out as to how hard to go back and start doing stuff...
Highlife 08-21-2007, 02:30 PM Go back into it at an easier pace. Try reduced weight and sets and maybe a shorter/less intense cardio. If all that seems very easy, step it up a notch next time you go in.
Why even risk aggravating the said injury?
I normally go 4-6 times a week for a few hours depending on schedule.I think I know why you got injured!
dweeb 08-21-2007, 04:25 PM ^ ... Why? How often do you go?
Gizmo 08-21-2007, 10:42 PM a few hours? wtf, few meaning 3-4? I hope you are in there tanning, getting a massage, showering, and sitting in the sauna or something.

Like it has been said, what is your injury exactly?
And as Rayn pointed out, you might be over training which leads to burn out, which then leads to reduced muscle "regeneration" and increased risk of injury. Do you sleep enough, eat enough?
One last thing: The real part of a workout is the rest. Rest is more important than the work out itself. You tear muscle fibers and rebuild them (strong and tougher) during the resting faze. This resting faze is predominantly during sleep.
I think I know why you got injured!
Haha I was waiting for that. No, I actually fell down some stairs and fucked up my knee. Nothing too serious, just limped around a bit and had to keep it wrapped for awhile. But I'd like to go back to the gym starting next week.

Usually take a cardio class of some sort (60 minutes), a yoga class (60 minutes), and lift for 30-60 minutes. Then I swim for 10-30 (depending on if I have time), sauna for a bit, shower, and leave.
Do you sleep enough, eat enough?
Honestly, probably not anywhere near on either count. I'm working on improving those two things though because I do realise how important they are.
blazindave 08-24-2007, 09:55 PM Do you have any breaks between those exercises? You should give yourself a good 15 minutes inbetween, while drinking plenty of WATER and eating some chocolate bars 1/4th of a banana (finish a banana by the end).
I am the king of burnouts, trust me, sleep + food = absolute importance. Naps don't cut it.
