Yes, it can be done. Now if you know anyone who has made communuity servers, please pm me so I dont waste the small amount of precious time left.

And thank you for your kind words.

Assuming there is no single answer, so I suggest the following:

1) load net analyzers to capture various communications methods betwen the game and the servers. COuld tell use what the "words" are going back and forth when a client pc logs in. I can do some of this, but I ask any one with experience or ideas to jump in.

2) Next we build a list of players who run servers to be be allowed on a temp list. As we are figuring out the client server communication, to make a client and servers FIND each other, the list of trusted sysops (running the servers) allows trusted people to sign up and enter their known information servers on a static list (NAME:GAMETTYPE:IP:PORT)

3) Begin building a Tribes Space to semi-duplicate the player pages, team pages and tmail. I can do all of this with MS WSS 3.0 (SharePoint). This will allow a player to use their browser to go to this site and sign up. Once validated (very simple, no pain, maybe even just make it immeadiate and check them for reality later if at all), then they can make their own player page if they care. I see this being more important for team pages. I can code this in C# with Microsoft SharePoint... can anyone help?

So, for each problems there is a temp and or perm solution. It will just take time.

I suggest, DarkStrand, we begin building a list of trusted peeople to being plans and drive some goals. Will you PM me?

There are several people in the community that know quite a bit about the auth and network stuff in T2. I'm sure some of them would be willing to give advice, though maybe not work on the project.

I'm somewhat interested in it, but I can't say that I could give any significant time.

I'll keep an eye on this thread though.

Everyone capable of helping or interested should check out this thread: The Construct Forums - Sierra shutting down master servers (http://www.the-construct.net/forums/showthread.php?t=818&page=3&pp=15)

This Thyth guy seems to really know what he's doing.

I just posted to them my ability to help and my thoughts. We'll see what happen in general.

Until we have a better solution my alt server is back online, everything in the first post should still stand true.

But its up to you to host a game server on it, I don't have the resources atm.

Well... my observations and attempted communications involving Thyth... I PM'd him and we chatted once on IM. It's clear that he is out to beat others "to the market" with his Ruby solution for ego. And I have reviewed all of his words and work... other than to say it would not go over well, I will reserve judgment (kind of)... were he one of my employees he'd not be hired ;). There are some seriously concerning technological issues I have seen and why it's being done the way it is. Worse is what is what is being spoken of and what is not. As we will do (the team I am working with), it would be nice if there were any diagrams or documentation to see. This is a sign of immaturity and ego. It's truly too bad as it sounds that some fantastic skills may be available, but in the end, rather than working with others to guarantee a single community unit, he has guaranteed at least two systems will in time be in place, perhaps relegating the first one as being a stop-gap that only some players use, while other chose not to. Especially since web-operators, can posts lists of valuable servers online, or pass out files that are preprogrammed to contain Favorites (this is what we will do among other things at EWO at first) and then full systems will come online. The real decider is as players vote by their choices of use. Fastest may be best, but it is uncommon.

I can understand how he may have come across to you, seeming to dismiss all of your ideas (and I've known a few others over the years who have been a bit upset by him as well), but I can assure you, he does not think of you as competition, nor set out to be "first". The core work began months ago, the plan is to be there and ready to take the load, not to take glory for something so trivial. The wider goal is for it to be as simple as possible for the client. You download a simple patch (or pre-patched fill game once it's available), click install, launch the game, register and login through a slightly modified GUI, and use the regular functionality of the game to list and join servers. In the coming months we plan to bring back the additional online features, and to apply these to patched clients through an auto-updater.

Both of us have written our own script-based systems in the past. If the goal was to be the first out, it'd be simple enough. Try not to pass judgement on a project based on your disagreements with one man.
Yes, he loves his cryptography, but every idea and offer that is presented is given due consideration. Thyth merely gives his opinion of such in response. He has done nothing to guarantee a split, and every response I've seen him give to you is straightforth and to the point. Any sense of immaturity or egotism you've picked up is not apparent, but I know he can come out as a bit critical when addressing his key topics if you're on the recieving end.
As I understand it, a meeting to discuss your input was scheduled, but you never showed, though he waited over an hour -- I'd imagine he'd feel a bit insulted by this if you're referring to anything that may have passed between you afterhand.
Other than that, people from other any projects that may exist have scarcely even made contact.

Sounds like ViciousStarFish is getting upset that he's not in charge.

One thing I am not liking about the modified executable route, is that the linux users are kinda humped.

you only need the modified exe if you are hosting a server, to connect to gameservers you don't need it at all.

so if we are not hosting any game servers, what do we need to do?

Yeah, so what's the best option here?

Morrow has put his server back online, however what's happening with TribesNext?

Just install the script like you would any other :

Installation:
1. Unzip to you main Tribes2 Folder (C:/Dynamix/Tribes2) and overwrite all files if asked.
2. Launch the "Tribes 2 Online - Alternate Master Server.bat" file inside your Tribes2 folder to start playing.

@GKFC
I'll keep mine online as long as it's used, I'll be updating it soon to actively remove servers from the list that are no longer online to keep things tidy.

Great work. Thank you very much for putting this together. I came back to play some T2 and found I could not log in. It's great to see people still care and play the game.

I updated the script an fixed a bug with it, you should see more servers now. I included a fixed linux sever file as well.

Is that both a client side and server side fix?

Who needs to update to this version?

I was thinking it would be awesome if there was a Tribes 2 wiki. There's obviously enough community support, I was just thinking when someone searches for "Tribes 2" that should be the first thing on the result list.

Upon clicking that sucker it offers the latest free version download (prepatched with this master server list) and because it's a wiki we could get interest in modders posting howtos for installing or using mods.

Anyway, I know we have tribalwar, but with all due respect to an already awesome website it holds a ton of community content but very indirect actual game content. Obviously, the reason is that all of the forum talk, and news chatting and tournament reminders end up making it really hard to find the actual downloadable game or how to use it. Which makes the playerbase suffer..

The bottom line is, if you want more servers/players. You need to make it REALLY stupidly easy to download and start playing. Otherwise you're fighting and uphill battle for eternity.

Contact me if you're interested in server space, I could also cook up a website and interface.
