Working out till you puke

I've been bulking since Feb. and just began to step up my cardio big time to prepare for the Army. The last 3 sessions have all been about an hour and a half of intense cardio including 2 mile runs, sprints, jumping jacks, push ups, etc. and I've puked multiple times during each. Obviously my body isn't used to the intense cardio and I'm sure the heat doesn't help much, but what can I do to avoid feeling so tired that I lose my lunch?

I've tried not eating at least an hour beforehand and not drinking as much water before and during working out, but it hasn't helped a noticeable amount. I usually feel a lot better after puking, but I'd rather avoid it if possible and I'm looking for some tips that could help. For ex. does keeping your heart rate up (like by jogging in place) in between exercises help more than just sitting down to catch your breath? Ever run so much that you feel like you have to shit?

*inhales*

(standard I puked during crossfit at first but not anymore lots of rangers/seals/LEO/etc do CF the canucks tested it against their PT and it kicked ass the marines had the cf guy help them write their new functional concept for fitness the metcon workouts are the money workouts because they get you used to intensity most workouts are low intensity even if they are done with a lot of grunting jogging and powerlifting combo although popular is low intensity but when you do workouts for time it changes the intensity level).

After these intense sessions I'm usually sore for a day or two. If I want to improve, should I continue to run on those off days even when I'm sore? Cardio is so much different than just lifting, so I never know if it's better to let the body heal or just keep throwing more at it to increase your endurance.

Try not eating 2 hours or more before working out. I know some hardcore cyclists swear by not eating 4 hours before their ride.

I know in lifting you want to be completely recovered to make optimal gains and I would think the same principal applies here. You could be headed for an injury if you don't slow it down.

Also you are a badass and way more hardcore than 99% of people. grats.

Back in swimming it was not rare to have to get out of the pool and puke because you were so fucking beaten up.

Something about that just screams "unhealthy" to me.

Big Monkey's right. Take it down a notch. Puking every once in a while won't hurt you, but you shouldn't be doing it regularly. Basic is going to be tough, but not *that* tough. The only time you should puke is when they make you chug two full canteens of water. Most of your platoon will puke along with you, so just sit back and watch the fun.

Agreed. I've never worked out so hard that I puked. I can't imagine how intense the workout must be for you to get to that level.

I was just about to make a topic about this. The past 2 workouts I had to stop because I felt like I was about to puke and came pretty damn close. Its weird because I do it while lifting weights rather than cardio...although I am putting a lot of strain on my body which is probably the problem.

I seem to get sick during my ab workout which makes sense. Anyone else have this problem? I guess I should step it down but I would feel like I wont get a full workout

Today I didn't even eat anything and still puked about 3/4 of the way through my 1.5 hour session. I woke up at about 2 and drank a protein shake and began my session at 3. By 4 I was doing alright until a heavy stench of Chinese food from the nearby plaza wafted in and turned my slight nausea into projectile vomiting. Again, after 2 minutes I was fine and able to continue for another 30 minutes, but it sucks, especially since I'm losing precious calories and I already have enough trouble maintaining my appetite during the day.

I have NEVER EVER puked before when I work out.

I once took my old roommate back in college, and he puked after I had him do my routine. I don't really understand it.

read those first two sentences again and see if you see a problem with them. if you want to see how your body will work without eating, then don't eat. 'a protein shake' is still 'eating' when your body wants to throw up.

i'm not going to comment on your choice of workout protocol. for vomiting while working out you're either 1) working out too hard, 2) have a problem with digestion, 3) have some miscellaneous problem like dehydration. incidentally if you're working out really hard in the heat and vomiting, then losing calories is the least of your problems.

if you're not drinking water than you're dehydrating and your body's not happy about it. drink more water. for the duration you're working at, consider adding some kind of electrolyte replacement drink. even if you are drinking water you may not be drinking enough.

if you're drinking a lot of water and you're still having this problem, try going on an empty stomach once and see how that works out for you (you still have to drink the water).

So after the last two times of almost throwing up, my workout yesterday I felt a lot better. I got a lot more sleep, waited about an hour and a half after eating something before working out, and took a lot longer breaks in between each set/exercise. Seems like you tried most of those things so it could be different causes.

I always thought you should wait around 3 hours to let your food digest and about an hour before my workouts I drink sugar water...That's just what I do to enhance performance is athletic arena's/at the gym.

dude that's still as little as 45 minutes after eating...

the electrolyte comment could help. Could try gator/powerade or even just throw a dash of salt in your water bottle and eat bananas (a few hours) before working out or take a potassium supplement.

maybe call one of those ask-a-nurse hotlines or your doctor, or a trainer at wherever you are working out or something. I'm not trying to freak you out but this could be a serious problem if you are puking every single time you workout.

I've been pretty good the last couple cardio sessions, but that could be just because it's been about 20 degrees cooler out and the intensity has been about 80% as opposed to 100%. I've also made an effort to eat more than an hour or two before going out and that's seemed to help.

Today I rode my crappy 5 speed mountain bike around my hilly ass town for about 5 miles, and after this one really steep hill my quads were burning and I pushed them to exhaustion because I was so sore that I had to rest before going on. I didn't puke but I was a bit nauseous for about 30 minutes after and couldn't bike up any more hills after that massive one. I feel great now though and hopefully my body continues to adjust.

only time i've ever thrown up was when
a. i was out of shape coming into the workout
b. i didn't adequately warm up or cool down- after i finished i just stopped. that is a bad thing to do
