I need some advice on how to gain some mass, build up strength, etc.

I've been working out off and on for awhile and have managed to gain a few pounds but nothing major.

Here are some of the things I could use some advice on:

*Diet
*Exercises, reps, etc.
*Any good links (Found a few already but figured you guys know some good ones)

Also I have a question about how often someone should work out. I heard it was good to workout the same muscle group every other day, but others are saying every day is fine. Which one is right?

Do not work out the same muscle group within a 36 hour period. So every 2 days should be alright. Some people who lift one muscle group really hard will go a week before lifting it again.

Threads to look at for advice:
compile usefull resources (http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=496958)
gym workout newbie (http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=495123)
grocery list (http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=481846)

edit: So i guess i have no idea how to link shit... and i can't for the life of me figure it out. shoot me please.

don't work out the same muscle group every day
it's not efficient and plus, you have way too many muscles to work out in one day so it's better to split them into blocks.

how you decide to split them is entirely up to you

If you want to gain mass you shouldn't workout the same muscle everyday unless you have godlike genetics or you juice.

Buy the book

Starting Strength

by Mark Rippetoe, and use TW's Amazon link to do it.

It's quickly become the de-facto Stupid Simple way to get big and strong. I've already gained 15 lbs, an easy 10 of muscle, in the two months since I got that book. It gave me the knowledge necessary to do the Big 3 (bench/squat/deadlift) without worrying about killing myself doing it wrong.

Plenty of people on the interwebs, on other bodybuilding-type forums, have boiled the book's approach down to bullet points; just google around a bit. The exercise program from the book is, I think, on a stickied thread at testosterone-nation.

You can't gain 10 lbs of muscle in 2 months.

Who wants to write a FAQ with links to threads about these repeating questions?

You're saying a person can't gain one and a quarter pounds of muscle per week?

Maybe it's more fat than muscle, then.

(It doesn't seem that far-fetched to me).

Yeah thats what he's saying.

It's amazing how many people put on like 15-20 lbs in 2 months and are like "HEY GUYS I PUT ON TONS OF MUSCLE." No, you didn't. You put on tons of fat.

10-15 lbs in 2 months hmm. Probably 2-5 lbs of that was muscle and 5 is really pushing it.

What if someone gained 15 pounds in 1-2 months and only gained 1% bf, resulting in a weight of 155lbs (from 140). If not fat, where might the extra weight have come from (not water)?

Darkstrand

I'd guess any combination of the three

(A) Incorrectly preformed or inaccurate body fat testing & inconsistent weighing
(B) Water (why not?)
(C) Steroids

by inconsistent weighing I'm suggesting the person started out with an average body weight of 145 and ended with one of maybe 150.

Sweet, maybe there are steroids in the supplements I take. Because I know for a fact it wasn't incorrect/inconsistent weighing and measuring, and I don't see how I would suddenly gain 15 pounds of water from nowhere.

the more muscle u add the more water ur gonna add. u dont just gain muscle without also gaining water. a large portion of muscle is water
