Armies of War - Introducing the Elves

http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/media/newsletter/2007_07/AoW_HighDarkElf_NL.jpg

Work is well underway on WAR’s final racial pairing – High Elf vs. Dark Elf – but we’re not quite ready to show them to you yet. The official unveiling of these armies will take place next month at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Until then, we offer you this brief introduction to the Elves with the hope that it gets you through the next 30 days. Enjoy!

Exclusive First Look - Empire Capital City

The great city of Altdorf is, in many ways, the heart of the Empire. The seat of the Emperor himself, Karl Franz, lies here in Altdorf within his grand, towering palace overlooking the vast city.

Beyond the palace, the streets of Altdorf are lined with blocks of tall, aging row houses that have been built up and onto repeatedly with each passing generating. On the winding streets, merchants peddle their wares including various sundries, weaponry, “rat on a stick” snacks, apothecary leeches, and anything else that will fetch a price.

The goal of the art design for the city was to relay the feeling of a living and thriving city, bustling with activity, while still showing a gritty and aging place as war and Chaos takes its toll. Some buildings are in disrepair. There are beggers and refuse in the streets. Sewers are rumored to be home to unspeakable things...

Even with this decay, the city is still a grand sight to see. You can find yourself walking in narrow corridors of high row houses only to round the corner and enter the decorated plaza surrounding the Temple of Sigmar, one of the great landmarks within Altdorf. Altdorf also has a large dock district with many Empire war galleons and smaller, mercantile vessels making port.

Another noteworthy landmark within Altdorf is the ever-burning Bright Wizard College. Huge gouts of flame and choking smoke billows from within this stone and metal citadel where wizards of the Empire learn their craft. The neighboring buildings have been reduced to ash and ruin by various, fiery experiments gone awry.

Any visitor to Altdorf will have a memorable experience, as this key city is a glorious testament to the achievements of the Empire.

Glory to Sigmar!

Painting the Bright Wizard College

The artists working on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning have a reputation for being a bit talented. Now see the proof. With audio commentary by our own Paul Barnett, this time-lapse video shows an entire day’s worth of painting boiled down to five minutes, as concept artist, Jonathan Kirtz, creates a color concept of the Bright Wizard College.

Work has begun on the Bright Wizard College in the game and it will soon be towering over the rooftops of Altdorf. Here is a sneak peak at the work-in-progress.

This month we present video from around the world of Warhammer Online, including a look at Empire and Chaos RvR Scenarios, monsters and Public Quests. The team is hard at work bringing more of this goodness to life and we'll have much more to share in the coming months. Enjoy!

Bonus Video of the Month - Beta Bug Burns Cows

During Beta we run into all kinds of little bugs, but we just had to share this one with you. The cows just wanted a nice bite of grass, but every time they took one, fiery death reigned down from above. Hope you like your burgers well done!

The Warhammer Online Grab Bag

http://www.warhammeronline.com/newsletter/images/2007/Grab_Bag_sec.jpg

Q: If I die during a public quest, and I miss parts of it/it ends while I'm running back to the area, do I still get rewarded?

A: If you’re involved in a Public Quest in any (positive) way, you’ll get rewarded. No exceptions. You earn Influence for your participation and can “spend” that on associated awards. The more you participate in a PQ, the more Influence you earn and the cooler the Influence Rewards you’ll get to choose from. When a PQ is successfully completed, those players that participated the most will also have the best chance of winning the loot dropped by the boss.

Q: Can you do the quests in an allied area or can you only do quests in your own zones? So as a Greenskin can I walk over to the Chaos starting zone and do the quest line for Chaos?

A: You can absolutely quest in any allied realm.

Q: Being that the level cap is 40 in this game, and most games out currently have a level cap of 60 plus, will this shorten the game? Is leveling slow? What rewards will leveling produce?

A: Things like level caps aren’t really comparable from one game to another. We could have a thousand levels and a game that plays “shorter” than another game with 50 levels. We could have ten levels and have it play “longer” than a 50 level game. We’re not trying to keep players away from Level 40 by forcing them into an endless grind of leveling. Our high-end content is the crowning jewel of the game and we WANT players to get there in a reasonable amount of time and see just how cool and engaging and dynamic it is.

It’s also a matter of how and when you want to be granting players new advancements, decisions, career branches, etc. and also what your end-goal for players is. In WAR, the number of places where you’re going to be able to advance your character is far more involved than many other games, so you’ll have a significant amount of goals to achieve in any given level – including things like standard abilities, tactics, morale abilities, Tome of Knowledge unlocks, Renown rewards and so forth. You’ll be making choices and accomplishing career milestones very frequently.

Q: I still don’t really get the whole idea of the RvR quests, could you explain what they will include? Are they of the “kill the mob”, “kill the players”, or “take the tower” variety?

A: Quests come in three “basic” flavors in WAR:

There are your “standard” PvE quests that occurs entirely outside of the RvR skirmish zones.

Then there are PvE quests that require you to ENTER an RvR-flagged area, but do not require you to kill another player to complete them.

Finally, there are RvR quests that require you to enter an RvR skirmish zone AND require you to kill another player (or players) to complete it. Attacking towers and keeps was Camelot’s game, WAR is focused on player combat.

Q: "Insert Question About Guild Beta Here"

A: I'll try to answer as many of the numerous questions I've seen floating around the various fansite forums here in one shot:

Don't worry if you haven't heard anything for your guild, it doesn't mean you were passed over. We are currently in the process of contacting the winning guilds.

When we contact the guilds selected, we are using the contact email provided in the application to contact the GM only. We will not be contacting the guild as a whole. It will be the GM's responsibility to then provide us with any further information we might require.

All hope is not lost if your guild doesn't make the initial cut of the guild beta phase. We will be expanding and adding more guilds down the road as we need them.

Each selected guild will receive a set number of beta slots based on the size of their guild. The number of slots given to each guild will be MUCH smaller than the total number of members the guild claims to have. Beta slot "packages" will range in size from 6 to 36 slots based on guild size.

As well as adding more guilds down the road, we will also reward incredibly active and helpful guilds over the course of the beta process by giving them additional beta codes/slots to hand out within their guild.

that is one of the most important lines right there. that means if we get an invite, and we decide to hand out codes to people who arent there to write bugs, but only play the game BE is fucked as a whole because we will not get anymore invites.

the problem is, who will stand up and actually step down because they know they won't do shit in beta, and who will be a selfish faggot who doesn't care about the rest of the group getting in and sitting on their ass
