Hell Phoenix 07-18-2007, 11:51 PM I was wondering if anyone knew what type of interface this device used... USB or firewire? I look at the pics and I cant see any connector slots except for a 9v one. There's no mention in product description or in the manual..

Hell Phoenix 07-19-2007, 10:32 AM hehehe oops
Buy M-Audio MXL 990/991 Recording Mic Duo and M-Audio Audio Buddy Package online (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/MAudio-MXL-990991-and-Audio-Buddy-Package?sku=703626)
that one!
I don't think it had either. Surely it would have been mentioned.
Looks like only audio connectors.
"Professional balanced/unbalanced line output "

But it was under recording gear... so i cant record onto my computer with it?
AniMisM 07-20-2007, 04:20 PM It's just a preamp with 1/4" Outs. Get a different interface if you want to record direct to your computer. See this thread for some suggestions:

old_skul 07-20-2007, 06:18 PM As Animism stated, it's just a preamp. Not an interface at all.
If you want to record into your computer, I highly recommend the Presonus Firebox interface. It's great sounding, has 2 mic and 2 line ins, and uses Firewire which is *much better* than USB.
USB has a lot of latency. Stick with Firewire if at all possible. Even if you don't have FW on your comp, you can get a firewire card at ChumpUSA for like $15.

There's nothing wrong with USB 2.0. I have a Edirol UA-1000 (http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-1000/index.html) and it works great.
Nomad 08-03-2007, 06:32 PM It better work well for 800 fucking dollars.
I find it so frustrating how much you have to balance cost/quality/performance while managing a price range that goes from 30 dollars to 2000
Fuck. I still dont know what to buy either. I JUST WANT TO CAPTURE GUITAR AUDIO TO MY FREAKING COMPUTER
AniMisM 08-05-2007, 11:47 PM Just get a Line 6 GuitarPort or TonePort. They're great for the price.
Felonius 08-06-2007, 02:10 PM Nice, a music forum. I just noticed it was here.
Old_skul is responsible for recommending probably half the gear I've purchased over the years. He knows his shit. :) I have a M-Audio Audiophile USB, and it works fine for recording one instrument at a time, but the USB latency issue can be annoying. I will go with Firewire next time around. You can google "USB vs Firewire" if you want to read about how FW is superior.

Ive decided i will just get line6 everything. yes really
Quiksilver 08-09-2007, 12:07 AM Ive got an Alesis Multimix Firewire. Great since you can track multiple channels. (up to 4) to the PC at a time.
Im having trouble getting it working in Reason. w/e Audition is fine for tracking
Is it just me, or does every DAW have a stupid interface? Audition is the only one remotely easy to understand what the fuck is going on
AniMisM 08-09-2007, 01:04 PM It's just you :p: There are lots to choose from.
Audition is probably the easiest to use, next to the lightweight Tunafish (http://www.brambos.com/) sequencer. ProTools, Ableton Live and Orion Pro/Platinum are pretty straight-forward sequencers. FL Studio, Acid Pro and Reason are pretty good as well, but more suited for loop-based music. Cubase, Nuendo, SONAR, Samplitude and Logic are more complicated, but better once you learn them.
old_skul 08-12-2007, 01:56 AM I'm a Cubase guy myself. Once you learn one program, it's pretty easy to figure out the rest - they all do the same thing. You basically have to make a channel, assign an input and an output, and set it up to record a specific channel off your hardware interface. That's the story with all of the audio-oriented interfaces.
As far as those hardware interfaces - I still recommend, in the following order, from best to worst:
Any PCI interface except M-Audio
RME Firewire interfaces
Presonus FW interfaces
M-Audio USB interfaces
Line6 USB interfaces
Edirol USB interfaces
I use a Presonus Firestudio for my main room, and a Presonus FireBox for my 2nd room (for recording overdubs). If you have the money for an RME, I recommend them - they sound great.
old_skul 08-12-2007, 01:56 AM BTW, Thanks, Fel. I try to keep up with what's happening in the industry and have since I was a wee kibble.
Nomad 08-12-2007, 05:53 PM I hear good things about usb 2.0 devices with cutting latency, but ive never tested (and there is only 1 or 2 products that support true USB 2.0 -- but on paper it's faster than Firewire)
old_skul 08-13-2007, 12:32 AM It's faster than firewire for throughput, but for latency, FW wins hands down. It' just like SCSI vs IDE: IDE depends on the CPU to manage data xfer, and do does USB/USB2. Firewire, like SCSI, has its own dedicated host interface processor to handle the data xfer and the CPU is not involved in any way.
PCI interfaces are the same: they have their own dedicated host processor to handle the data xfer.
AniMisM 08-13-2007, 11:18 AM What old_skul is saying is true. However, you can still work with USB at a reasonable latency (I get 12ms with the UA-1000 on a 2GHz machine at 48kHz), and when using direct monitoring there's no delay, so it's a non-issue anyways. Line 6 has also developed their "ToneDirect" monitoring for their USB devices, which is essentially direct monitoring with effects. I'm interested to see how that works.
I recommend the same as old_skul for a basic recording interface - the PreSonus Firebox is a great little box for a small price. I just wanted to say that USB isn't as bad as it's made out to be.
Orestes 08-13-2007, 11:24 AM Animism, hop on IRC when you get a chance, I needs some halp!
