Uncle Slappy 07-13-2007, 05:48 PM I made a hunter for the Shattered Halls server since I've never played one before. I just hit lvl 10 and I have a scorpion pet because I figured they had poison and good armor. Is there a better choice for grinding? I know boars are popular and have a charge, but I also know from looking on-line that a Hyena looks like a very well rounded choice. Any hunters here that can share from personal experience?
Uncle Slappy 07-13-2007, 05:50 PM Scratch the me having a scorpion thing, I alt+tabbed to post that and he evidently left me.
solo grind - boar: charge is excellent and gore is a nice focus dump
edit: bat/owl/carrion bird is also good for screech, if you need a pet to hold more than one creature at a time.
redlighter 07-13-2007, 05:56 PM I use a cat with "Growl". It's good for getting and holding aggro... Which I have had troubles in the past with. Hunters crits tend to make mobs a little cranky and after the kitty got Growl, I only take aggro after a 400+ aimshot crit. (i'm only lvl 28)

I knew there had to be a reason so many people had boars. Also, can a pet just really leave your ass if you haven't had him long? I'm kinda pissed at my scorpion.
Also, do you normally give the boar commands to do shit? Or just set all it's skills to auto?

If his happiness gets too low when you first get the pet, yes. You have to keep feeding the shit out of the new pet to gain "loyalty".
Keep her happy

Well I fed his ass a bunch, but I guess not enough, I fed it yesterday a couple times before bed.
Uncle Slappy 07-13-2007, 06:06 PM Oh and how can you tell how happy they are?
Boars are nice for leveling because they eat EVERYTHING
GeneralHell 07-13-2007, 07:16 PM I have a hunter on another server who's had a cat through most of its leveling career. I guess the only thing I really liked about it was the stealth ability. As a nelf you can shadow and stealth your pet making for a nice surprise on unsuspecting pvp-ers. Not particularly useful but fun.
Boars are the way to go for leveling from what I've read.
Feannag 07-13-2007, 07:41 PM You know, in my over 3 - 4 years playing a hunter I have never had a pet leave me. Ever. Even when they are freshly tamed and I had no food I still haven't had one leave me. Which begs the question...
What are you fools doing for this to happen?
StarZ 07-13-2007, 08:14 PM i leveled my hunter with a cat from about 26-61 .. at 61 i picked up a ravager and loved it. you can tame low level ones in the BE starting zone. i think a turtle might be nice for taking on tough quest mobs with the shell ability but they only eat fruit. bears/boars are nice because they eat just about anything. a plainstrider would be cool because no one ever uses them, get that pink rare one from mulgore
Mangle-Me-Elmo 07-13-2007, 08:19 PM ive heard that hunters are faggots and so are ppl that play them
but i dont know how reliable that information is since im pretty sure i heard it from me
StarZ 07-13-2007, 08:20 PM Oh and how can you tell how happy they are?
at the end of the pet health bar there is a little icon, mouse over it to see how "happy" your pet is, if it isn't green feed him. dont just feed feed feed, it takes about 10-12 seconds for your pet to "eat" his food, your combat log should show when he is done eating, then feed him again if you need to. keep them happy and they won't run away!
leetdemon 07-13-2007, 08:25 PM cat or pig either one :)
The_Ham 07-14-2007, 12:21 AM I recommend the boar for reasons already stated and I <3 oinkers.

Joemomma5000 07-14-2007, 01:31 PM The best pet changes depending on level. You train your pets skills that are taught by catching other pets who have that skill and learning it yourself. Below are a few websites that show every pet possible, what skills they have, what they can learn, where to find them, etc. Cats/Ravagers are the best pets IMO because of their focus-dumping potential. However, after 24 you can't pickup another rank of Gore until 48, so I wouldn't bother with a ravager until Hellfire at 61. Kitties have the most focus-burning skills, have dash and stealth (although I dont use stealth, unless you're NE it's pretty useless for leveling imo) and have the most options to train skills and progress alongside your hunter. Look and see on every level "is there a skill I can grab from another animal for my kitty?". Grab a Stranglethorn Tiger for Dash 1 at lvl 32 and then just keep him forever IMO. Spec 100% Beast Mastery, and keep a slow-firing gun of about 2.7-2.8 for maximum potential on shot rotations for the BM spec.

Is a thread I wrote asking for help for my alt, below someone outlines in plain english the proper shot rotation to maximize dps.
Feign Death drops combat for whoever is attacking you, so use it as a spell break instead of a psych-out.
Spend the money on a nice ranged weapon for BM. Your pet will hold aggro like crazy so you just want those few hits to count.
Check out Mouthparty on Frostmane in the armory for where I'm at with my alt. I don't know a lot about hunters, but now you have a basic idea of what I have picked up from the forums and trial/error.
The biggest thing about pets really is just constant number crunching and looking shit up.
Hope this helps!

What is a shot rotation?
