I read everything except the spam.
That spam was worse than any spam ever posted by the likes of Cyanide, and is as deserving of a ban, imo.
I also prefer T1. I agree with Pendragon's post about the difference between T1 and T2 skills.
Personally I've grown to explain the teamwork differences between T1 and T2 like this: T1 requires some pre-game strategic planning and lots of in-game on-your-feet thinking, improvisation, and "natural" teamwork. T2 requires lots of pre-game strategic planning and some in-game on-your-feet thinking and improvisation--but the resulting teamwork seems more "artificial".
These differences, along with the difference in speed and movement, make T1 more fun for me. For *me*. KineticPoet. The guy whose name celebrates the joy of movement in Tribes. If someone can ever make T2 as fun, with appropriate maps, I'd be all over that (and it's not enough to allow jumping out of vehicles at high speeds...I wanna moooove, not be moved).
sKILLz, ladder systems breeds boredom and frustration if you're a team that gets stuck at the top. Ask any team that's spent a few weeks there. Spend a few months there, and it drives you nutz. Locke was basically right, and although he joined IE somewhat late he was a key player in our Gala wins, which took place near your era methinks.
I totally agree IE would've faced some mad competition had we stayed...but at the time, we were burnt out, plain and simple. We couldn't foresee so many teams even reaching the same level, let alone surpassing us. And that you did. You guys gave birth to yet another generation of kickass competition, and it was really fucking hard coming back a year later to compete amidst equally talented and passionate players. But it was also really fucking fun.
I think T1 (or a different T2) has the potential to keep doing that, to keep giving birth to countless new generations of competition. Even a single new, intelligently crafted map can bring so much to the game. Movement in T1 has infinite possibilities...the headroom for skillz is unbounded. And I wanna move, not be moved.
I challenge you guys to go play a game of T1 if you haven't for awhile. Hop onto Wayside or Shithead's and have a go at it, then come back here and tell me that you don't still love it. I don't expect you to "convert" back or anything...I'm just asking that you remember how amazing the game is. You might find T2 amazing too, and that's great.
But don't be afraid to forget about your "obligations" for a second, to brush away any money that gets waved in your face. Don't be afraid to remember, to think about what makes games fun for you, and to be vocal about those things so that games will keep improving in a direction that you like.
But most of all, don't be afraid to step back from it all and admit that the sequel that many hoped would be three steps forward didn't end up being that way. Nor was it three steps back...it was three steps sideways, imo, in a direction that is still kinda fun for me but not as fun as before. For those that find it more fun, enjoy. In the meantime I'll keep on hoping for something else, and I'll stick with what I love,
