I read everything except the spam.

That spam was worse than any spam ever posted by the likes of Cyanide, and is as deserving of a ban, imo.

I also prefer T1. I agree with Pendragon's post about the difference between T1 and T2 skills.

Personally I've grown to explain the teamwork differences between T1 and T2 like this: T1 requires some pre-game strategic planning and lots of in-game on-your-feet thinking, improvisation, and "natural" teamwork. T2 requires lots of pre-game strategic planning and some in-game on-your-feet thinking and improvisation--but the resulting teamwork seems more "artificial".

These differences, along with the difference in speed and movement, make T1 more fun for me. For *me*. KineticPoet. The guy whose name celebrates the joy of movement in Tribes. If someone can ever make T2 as fun, with appropriate maps, I'd be all over that (and it's not enough to allow jumping out of vehicles at high speeds...I wanna moooove, not be moved).

sKILLz, ladder systems breeds boredom and frustration if you're a team that gets stuck at the top. Ask any team that's spent a few weeks there. Spend a few months there, and it drives you nutz. Locke was basically right, and although he joined IE somewhat late he was a key player in our Gala wins, which took place near your era methinks.

I totally agree IE would've faced some mad competition had we stayed...but at the time, we were burnt out, plain and simple. We couldn't foresee so many teams even reaching the same level, let alone surpassing us. And that you did. You guys gave birth to yet another generation of kickass competition, and it was really fucking hard coming back a year later to compete amidst equally talented and passionate players. But it was also really fucking fun.

I think T1 (or a different T2) has the potential to keep doing that, to keep giving birth to countless new generations of competition. Even a single new, intelligently crafted map can bring so much to the game. Movement in T1 has infinite possibilities...the headroom for skillz is unbounded. And I wanna move, not be moved.

I challenge you guys to go play a game of T1 if you haven't for awhile. Hop onto Wayside or Shithead's and have a go at it, then come back here and tell me that you don't still love it. I don't expect you to "convert" back or anything...I'm just asking that you remember how amazing the game is. You might find T2 amazing too, and that's great.

But don't be afraid to forget about your "obligations" for a second, to brush away any money that gets waved in your face. Don't be afraid to remember, to think about what makes games fun for you, and to be vocal about those things so that games will keep improving in a direction that you like.

But most of all, don't be afraid to step back from it all and admit that the sequel that many hoped would be three steps forward didn't end up being that way. Nor was it three steps back...it was three steps sideways, imo, in a direction that is still kinda fun for me but not as fun as before. For those that find it more fun, enjoy. In the meantime I'll keep on hoping for something else, and I'll stick with what I love,

=( not smart, but probably long-winded...sorry. Here's a shorter version, which is all I really wanted to say anyway:

No matter what T1 is dying. Even if all the teams from the T1 ladder go back, the game will slowly be drained of players as people leave due to real-life issues, getting sick of the game, etc.,. There won't be any "newbies" to train, because they will all be playing T2.

Even in the final 6 months or so of T1, the ladder was going downhill and good players were quitting continuously.

T1 is slowly dying, and there is not much anyone can do about it.

/me nods vigorously at KP

You put things so well. If I could put the things in my brain about T2 that well, that's how I'd put them.

BTW Mike, I've been having a million thoughts about 'the game' and nobody to share them with, so try to be around more and I will too =)

And for those of you who are trivializing this thread: we know that T1 will never be as great as it was, but this discussion isn't just a pointless whine. Hopefully it will bring awareness to the problems that many of us have with T2, and hopefully somebody out there (or even one of us in here) is listening and will do something about it in the future.

I agree that T2 has problems, but i also think changing T2 back to T1 would be a big mistake. I like lots of things about T2 (like vehicles and stuff). If T2 (competitively) was changed back to T1 it would get boring pretty fast. There has to be a middleground, like designing new maps, that we should take.

I think that a game that was as hyped and long coming as t2 is bound to be dissapointing. I am dissapointed, I will probably always prefer t1 to t2. To me it feels like I am a midget with a 6ft. head on my 3ft. body and I am stuck to the ground. I also don't really care for the colors. They seem kinda pastelled and...kinda queer. I hope to see a lot of the people that left Dynamix and went to Garage games or whatever make a Tribes kind of game that is more like t1...to satisfy all of us t1 crybabies.

I wasn't necessarily suggesting changing T2. T3 perhaps? Or maybe something else? Who knows.

In the meantime I will continue to play T1.

Is buying or convincing Dynamix to release the T1 source code out of the question?

I still maintain that would be a good solution.

We could fix the 3 major bugs (flag skip, non-regs, texture bumps (when you stop skiing dead for no reason)).

We could add better OpenGL support.

We could enhance the graphics and create new maps.

The last part you don't need the source code for, but the first 2 things I feel are very important.

Instead of just denying we wanted T1 with prettier graphics, I guess I'll say what I wanted from T2(yes I know no one cares, oh well)

The only thing I wanted in T2 was the crisp movement and speed of T1. Absolutely everything else could have been changed, and that's actually what I wanted. I don't want T2 changed back to T1 because I, like many others, did get bored at the end.

What I wanted was lots of new fun things added. I wanted creative new weapons, maybe some armors with attribute differences other than speed and damage, interesting vehicles(sorry, I think the T2 ones are totally uninspired), etc. Instead I feel we got basically just T1 with basic gameplay changed and a new engine. There are no creative additions or new fun in my eyes. The cloaking pack and shocklance were fun for a couple hours, but after that I couldn't find anything new and exciting about T2.

I'm honestly curious what T1 vets find fun in T2, so this isn't really a whine. Maybe I missed something. I can understand why non-vets like it, because it's a new experience. To me it just feels like a rehash of an old and played out design.

We both stopped. It was only briefly entertaining being a spamming moron. I apologize :)

For me its the new tactics. I'm a huge strategy buff I like the planning and the implementation. Its not just ski, disk, chain. I love flying and driving. I'm actually a decent pilot (much to my suprise ;)) I can keep a bomber or havoc in the air long enough to do a decent job (or an even better one with support) tanks are hella fun not just running people over but finding those great spam spots. Shrikes are alright but every body and their mother in law is doing that. I like HO turret/flag D killing thats fun on maps like Riverdance, Quagmire and tombstone. On vehicle maps its harder to pull off cause everyone wants to kill the gens instead so if ya get a ride they aren't taking you to the flag (on pubs that is). But I leave the area you asked about yeah its a lot of the same equipment (a given in a sequel) but its how you use them (and everythings got a use at least right now) that makes the game fun for me.
