[FTM]Tequila 05-22-2001, 04:11 PM This thread needs to be immortalized for the Nat = LD thing.
nostratic 05-22-2001, 04:12 PM This is a hella big thread.
I had all kinds of witty, thoughtful insights into T2 as a game, but everyone's said everything already.
I dunno. I like T2. It's hard. I've never played an FPS like it (never played T1). I like the fact that I have to really think about turret/sensor placement, attack routes, etc. I can see how HO would be addictive in T1; I would probably be HOing all the time now if they could ski a bit quicker. But I understand the limits put on ski speed. If I'm in a humongous, heavy suit of armor, I shouldn't be able to ski as fast as someone in medium or light armor, no matter how good a skier I am, or how effective my discjumps are.
I'm just taking T2 as it is, bugs and all. I sucked when I first played Doom, and Quake, and UT, and all the others until I figured out the nuances, and that can take awhile. But I see that there's a lot of loyalty to T1, which is understandable. You play a game for a year or two solid and it becomes more than just a game. I did the same thing with Asheron's Call (until I quit a couple months ago). You learn a game in the long-term like that, and it becomes familiar, and sort of comforting, like reading a book over and over and enjoying it every time. But personally, I need new books, too. And new games to keep me interested.
T2, IMHO, is head and shoulders above and beyond any other FPS out there right now. The game play is deep, the learning curve is somewhat high, it requires lots of communication and coordination, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. I've said this before, and someone else in this thread before me, but T2 is definitely a thinking man's FPS. I didn't get T2 to play Q3 again. I've been fast-twitching for 10 years, and it's time for something new.
And by the way, Giga and Pendragon, there's more than one way to be a llama. Putting up posts that are nothing more than thoughtless, pointless, and inflammatory personal attacks is one.

Locke355 05-22-2001, 04:36 PM -W- sKILLz,
Yes, after Reck lost to IE 2 summers ago, (time passes fast), vox lolnow and i left reck to go elsewhere (for the IE game i was techincally not on the RECK roster but still played for 1 of the 2 maps). The 3 of us played a few scrims/pickups with IE, vox was quickly added.. and i stopped playing tribes due to some IE simply not getting along with me, most my friends already gone & the only ones left were in IE, and just purely no real other competition for IE at the time. I started again in november around when lolnow was added to IE (if i remember right), and played for them on the Teamplay ladder and also once in a while on the OGL ladder when a body was needed.
I was NOT on the team (i was [IE*] or whatever), particularly for reasons previously stated, but participated in games where it was 8-0 8-0 every map. To me, that isn't much fun. I saw 5150 (now MUCH changed since then) just start out and lose to IE on the teamplay ladder, etc. Around january i still did not see much if any competition challenging IE (and as i had many friends in IE i didn't want to play for any other team), and THIS is the time i talked about when i said i stopped playing tribes. Shortly after i was changed from IE* to IE.. IE was off the OGL ladder.. blah blah.
This past summer was very good for tribes. 5150 and s3 had both matured into teams that were pretty damn impressive. Gala was definately fun. IE vs s3 and IE vs 5150 at gala in the tournament were both incredibly close games. I would be an idiot, and so would anyone else, saying that 5150 and s3 were not competition for IE when last summer rolled around. Unfortunately, both teams were also off the ladder's shortly before or shortly after gala.
Around January of last year (around when i quit) through March, up to some random point before summer started where 5150 and s3 really kicked it up a few notches, i dont think there was much competition for IE. When summer rolled around, it was obviously there from 5150 and s3, but that was serveral months after most of IE had stopped playing, and all IE really did was do the gala tournament and play at gala.
I hope this clarifies what point in time i was talking about, and i'm sorry if the generalities of my post offended you.
nigafool 05-22-2001, 04:39 PM Damn, and Locke like, wrote the book on HO!
