Nintendo Files Online Invitation System PatentrnrnNintendo has been issued a patent for what is termed an "Invitation system for on-line video games." (View patent application for US Patent No. 20070123353) Now, as we all know, this doesn't mean that any sort of system is immediately forthcoming. Nintendo, like any other company that is constantly working on new technology, files for patents all the time. Some get used, some don't, and some get shelved for possible later consumption.rn

"The patent itself describes a system through which one user can send a game invite to a friend they see logged in to the server."

you can patent that shit? wtf I'm going to patent the ability to show ping times on a server list!

it's not the result they are getting a patent for but the delivery system instead.

you can patent having a small button in the top right of a window to close it.

Modern patents are utterly broken.

I'll shoot myself in the face before entering another friend code.

Possibly not for long. Word has it the Supreme Court raised the 'obviousness bar' in a ruling for 'ksr int'l co v teleflex inc'

The the patent application (appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsea rch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=nintendo&OS=nintendo&RS=nintendo) they link to is incorrect, although it does have the word 'Nintendo' in it.

The actual (appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsea rch-bool.html&r=2&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=Nintendo&OS=Nintendo&RS=Nintendo) application is pretty stupid though. Basically describes inviting a person into a game that they're not in, and that person completely restarting the console to start the game (as Wiis/DSs don't have the 360's nice persistent Guide thing), while Nintendo's server stores the invite so that it's still there once the new game has started. If that isn't obvious, I don't know what is.

The only difference is the Wii has a great boot time and cd load time unlike the 360 ;)
