KnightMare 05-25-2007, 02:07 PM Definition: Trend (n.) - the general course or prevailing tendency. A leaning towards, a fad, a novelty.rnrnSo why do trends exist? Because they are familiar, they enable standards, and they just make life easier. In the case of video games, trends help companies maximize sales while reducing costs because gamers will purchase what they are accustomed to. But easier isn't always better. Here are eleven reasons why:
HomeSlice 05-25-2007, 02:26 PM Great job. I'm amazed.
Tribalbob 05-25-2007, 02:46 PM i'm 50/50 on that. some of them are worthy of being complained about, but some are just stupid things that people have been bitching about for the past decade
(lol sequels lol girls lol graphical gimmicks)
Half that list could really come under 1 heading.
TheGhost 05-25-2007, 08:03 PM uhhh military units being a bad trend? who else is going to fight a fucking war
licensed soundtracks add to alot of games, like GTA and racing games like need for speed
licensed soundtracks for a RPG are gay
gangsta themes and they put scarface down, what a bunch of fucking idiots, because when scarface came out, I'm sure they were thinking of a video game 2 decades later, same with the godfather
Beren 05-25-2007, 10:21 PM ya some of that is crap, and some of it is fine.
yes the Halo games bore me to tears, but i don't have to play them if i don't want. There are plenty of other games out there. I mean he complained about 4 or 5 genre types. That for one assumes there are stuff out there he does like, and only emphasises that there is choice in the market place. Sure we can always have more, but plenty of us like one of those genres, and not every game is good. So if you genre X and it has 6-7 different titles in that genre in the year, i bet most people would only actually like 1 of them. And the one they like won't be the same as everyone else.
Where is the WOW trend. It is the one where a crap game is kinda dominating a genre.
The Pope 05-26-2007, 05:14 AM Thats the dumbest article I've read for a long time.
Wah, soldiers fighting a war?
The supersoldier part is even worse. If we are still using worthless meatbags to fight in the year 3000, we deserve to be cocooned hosts for zerg larvae.
Daedalus 05-26-2007, 08:40 AM The only thing I agree with their is the WWII themed stuff, and I guess Bloom but it's really not that bad, and many games look better with it on than off (sometimes it's overused but it doesn't really make a game look bad or anything...)
Grief 05-26-2007, 09:05 AM Thats the dumbest article I've read for a long time.

See Half Life 2.
It is possible to build a game where the character is NOT a soldier or a part of an elite task force. Hell, it's usually a lot more fun if they aren't.
The Pope 05-26-2007, 09:46 AM HL2s ninja physicist just made the game feel silly. The simple fact is, soldiers make a better choice of character when your game is about killing people.
Outlaw. 05-26-2007, 11:57 AM i agree with #11 though, we don't need anymore kick ass hot chicks in games really. if you're playing games to look at hot girls then you lead a sorry, sad life.
Hurricane Harold 05-26-2007, 06:45 PM The point is that the chicks are perfect in video games. Tougher than any man, hotter than any other chick.
The Pope 05-26-2007, 08:41 PM i agree with #11 though, we don't need anymore kick ass hot chicks in games really. if you're playing games to look at hot girls then you lead a sorry, sad life. I do agree with 11 for the same reason the soldier complaints were ridiculous. A game about kicking ass should have a main character who looks capable of kicking ass. This allows for soldiers, robots, ninjas, pirates, vikings, knights, spartans, supersoldiers, wizards, aliens, monsters, superheroes, barbarians, cyborgs, zombies and a whole lot I didn't remember. Not really much of a limitation, but hot chick is not on that list.
Fugitive 05-27-2007, 12:52 AM That and the hot girls in videogames wear the most ridiculous outfits with steel thongs and nipple-armor. Samus was built like an Amazonian but at least her suit made sense, and she's probably the sexiest girl in videogames precisely because she's not a bubbling spigot of suggestive one-liners and rubbing tits in everyone's faces.
Tribalbob 05-27-2007, 02:32 PM gogo samus aran!
i wonder how the series would've fared if you found out samus was a chick right away.
Reaver 05-27-2007, 04:11 PM There would have been a lot more masturbating, a lot sooner.
NoFiX 05-28-2007, 02:18 PM sorry, i'd rather have a hot chick to look at than gofshgrl
Makoto 05-28-2007, 03:46 PM lol
Dranon 05-28-2007, 04:06 PM Hot chicks are fine, they are hot chicks after all.
The only trend I agree should die asap is the WWII trend.
Supersoldiers and soldiers... well hmmm who's fighting in a war again? Haa yes, the thousand of civilians. Yes!
Music is music, if it fits the game, licensed or not, it's fine.
Looks more like a whining article than anything else.
Grief 05-28-2007, 07:24 PM Supersoldiers and soldiers... well hmmm who's fighting in a war again? Haa yes, the thousand of civilians. Yes!
Why is this not hard to believe? How about a game where you try to topple some government?
This is called ORIGINALITY. You don't HAVE to be a soldier, for fucks sake.
I guess people are just stuck in the mindset that every game has to be of a war and that the war has to be fought by soldiers and tanks. I guess that's why every retarded sequal to medal of honor and call of duty gets sold.
