Shooting on VA Tech campus

Oh I understand that. And culturally there are huge gaps - Australians HANDED their guns back in (not sure if there was any refund or incentive other than it would soon be illegal). I think there'd be massive public uproar if Americans were asked/told to do the same. I understand it's part of your Bill of Rights or whatnot that you can bear arms.

Whereas, funnily enough, Australia was built on crime (though not really violence) and is quite peaceful.

I am not saying there is no crime or murder, but there isn't anything on such a scale - except for once in Tasmania, all those years ago. Could it happen again? Of course it could, it could happen anywhere anytime. It just doesn't seem to happen here, but it does in the US.

Just my observation - the answer, from an Australian point of view, sure as fuck is not to arm anyone anymore than they already are. Disarming people has worked quite well, as best I can tell, in Australia. Infact, in Melbourne, it is also now (as of a year or two ago) highly illegal to own swords without proper authorisation. This was to curb knife and sword crime, which was rising. Did it work? Honestly I don't know. The have been less reports of it in the media, but we all know that means jack shit.

you are very wrong and people who just read this drivel without researching the facts cause problems.

Because of the changes made to the gun control laws in 1997, gun owners in Australia were forced to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed, a program costing the government more than $500 million dollars. And now the results are in. After 12 months of banning firearms:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent;

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent;

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent).

Hot Burglaries are up 300% (where the intruders come in while you are home and knows that you are home).

In the state of Victoria, homicides with firearms are up 300 percent.

Figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms (but increased drastically in the past 12 months). There has been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly. Australian politicians are on the spot and at a loss to explain how no improvement in "safety" has been served after such monumental effort and expense was successfully expended in "ridding society of guns." Their response has been to "wait longer".

Their suggestion to citizens has been to build a fortified room in their house, so that when a burglar enters their home, the homeowners may lock themselves in that room while the burglar takes what he wants from their house.

At the time of the ban, the Prime Minister said, "self-defense is not a reason for owning a firearm."

FOXNews.com - Parents Demand Firing of Virginia Tech President, Police Chief Over Poor Handling of Mass Shooting - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266460,00.html)

Parents of a Virginia Tech student expressed outrage Monday at what they call an inadequate response by college brass to the worst mass-murder shooting in American history.

John and Jennifer Shourds of Lovettsville, Va. demanded the immediate firings of University President Charles Steger and Virginia Tech Campus Police Chief W.R. Flinchum who he said "screwed up" the handling of separate shooting incidents that left 33 students dead, including the shooter.

“My God, if someone shoots somebody there should be an immediate lockdown of the campus,” said John Shourds. “They totally blew it. The president blew it, campus police blew it.”

No :( Thats the suckiest part of this whole shitstorm. I just wanna know whether my professor is dead or not...

There is no way to get a hold of anyone that can tell me that.

I can't imagine he's alive after all of the witnesses said he was shot in the head :( but not knowing 100% sucks.

Wait wait, i know that i prolly skipped 20 pages atleast, but if he was your professor (correct me if im wrong on this) does that mean u skipped that class today?!

why can't it ever be the criminal's fault anymore? Do people honestly believe that the head of VT was negligent? Hell, he may not have even heard yet what had gone on by the time this guy started lighting people up again. Where's the responsibility, why does there always have to be a fall guy nowadays?

Steger will outlast this. He's just an egghead. He has no experience with security and the governor knows that. Flinchum will take the fall. Then the new chief will talk about what they could have done different and nothing else will change.

The VT president is not responsible for daily operation of security. I put the response to this on the security chief and the campus police. But the blame for the massacre, I agree, should solely be on the sick fuck that pulled the trigger over and over again.

Honestly, what were they supposed to do? Some can argue that they should have locked it all down sooner and further, and while that probably would have helped, it's mostly hindsight and certainly debatable. You just can't plan for the scenario where a well armed student decides to mow down an entire classroom in a random building on campus, it isn't feasible.

I'm not entirely sure what you can do.

Campus police don't have the resources to go door to door and lockdown the moment they figure out there may be some nut on campus. Nor could they possibly ever check what every student on campus is carrying with them.

The whole idea of a lockdown seems strange to me. knowing the size of campus, the logistics of that would be pretty amazing to pull off in a couple of hours with the manpower available. This also needs to be kept in perspective. we're talking about a community that feels perfectly safe leaving their doors unlocked at night and when they run out to the store for a gallon of milk. Every year both Blacksburg and VT police practically scream at the community to take basic safety precautions. They were mainly concerned with things like theft and drunken students wandering into the wrong house/apartment. I can tell you mass murder was never on anyone’s mind.
