Ok, the idea of more guns just seems silly to me. People panic, so you hear something that sounds like a shot, everyone in the room starts freaking out, next person that walks through the door gets shot because people think they had a gun... when they were holding a cell phone.

Or how about a room with 100 people, one person fires a shot, everyone starts pulling out their gun, now out of those 100 people how many know exactly who fired a shot? maybe 2 to 3, but everyone has guns, so everybody starts shooting any other person with a gun that looks like a threat, so any shot that is fired makes the person that fires their gun a target for other people, until you have everyone shooting.

It isn't always clear to explain things like this on TW, because everyone is going to be so super cool and calm when people are shooting at them, probably tossing out a one liner after dispatcing any bad guys.

From Wikipedia:

The effect of various concealed carry laws are the subject of past and present research. In his book, More Guns, Less Crime, John Lott's analysis of crime report data has shown some statistically significant effects of concealed carry laws. One major conclusion was that locations which enacted more permissive concealed carry laws had a decrease in violent crime, but an increase in property crime.

Don Kates summarizes the consensus reached by criminological research into gun control thus: "Unfortunately, an almost perfect inverse correlation exists between those who are affected by gun laws, particularly bans, and those whom enforcement should affect. Those easiest to disarm are the responsible and law abiding citizens whose guns represent no meaningful social problem. Irresponsible and criminal owners, whose gun possession creates or exacerbates so many social ills, are the ones most difficult to disarm."[7]

Regardless of the interpretation of statistics, the trend in the United States has been towards greater permissiveness of concealed carry. In Florida, which first introduced "shall-issue" concealed carry laws, crimes committed against residents dropped markedly upon the general issuance of concealed-carry licenses, which had the unintended consequence of putting tourists in Florida driving marked rental cars at risk from criminals (since tourists may be readily presumed unarmed.) Florida responded by enacting laws prohibiting the obvious marking of rental cars.

Actually I agree with you.....

Criminals will always have guns, doesn't matter where you are, the criminals will always find a way to get a gun, the only way to stop them is to make them second guess that the person they are about to commit a crime on can shoot back at them.

Yes Criminals will always have guns, but to me it seems that it's not the regular criminals who are doing these shootings, only students or former marines who go nuts.

Second guess? These guys always know that they will die anyway. Spread more guns around and these shootings will multiply.

It's been a rough day. I was in a building right behind Norris hall, and watched the police's response unfolding to the events.

Everyone on campus is pretty much in shock. Basically everyone here is waiting for the list of victims to come out. Our cell phones are pretty much down because everyone is calling everyone to see if they are okay. The closest person I knew that was injured was my roommate's girlfriend's sorority sister who got shot in the head and the stomach. I have heard she is currently in the hospital in ICU, but noone can be too sure since its so hard to get ahold of people, and they arent releasing any information about the victims.

How do you figure? If I'm a criminal, I can walk down to the street corner and get a gun from the neighborhood dealer. (not really but it's not hard) Criminals will always get guns.

Gun crime legislation only hurts the law-abiding people.

:(

My phone hasn't worked since 10:30 this morning. I occasionally get text messages 10 at a time from people that are worried but i can't respond. I don't even know if half of my friends are okay because i can't get onto campus and I can't get a hold of them on the phone.

And the news reporting of this is making me sick. They smell the blood and work themselves into a frenzy trying to find someone to tar and feather.
