Metal detectors only stop concealed carry. They wouldn't stop a kid from walking in shooting. Since you fail to deal with the reality, watch the first Matrix movie and see how metal detectors worked.

The fact is the police probably did everything they could do. They can't run in shooting until they figure out who to shoot at. They don't know if he rigged up bombs or other traps.
