They'll call for metal detectors and ID badges to unlock doors. Here at my job, you have to swipe a badge anytime you pass thru a door. Hindsite is 20/20 now. If the security person could have pushed a button locking all doors and not letting anyone move except for admins, they'll say it would have been different.

Bomb threat closes Torgersen, Durham, Whittemore halls; events relocated; $5,000 reward offered

BLACKSBURG, Va., April 13, 2007: (6:15 p.m. EDT) Virginia Tech is offering a $5,000 reward related to the two recent bomb threats on campus.

The reward will be given for information or leads leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in either bomb threat incidents occurring April 2 or April 13.

Information should be directed to Virginia Tech Police at 232-TIPP (8477).

Virginia Tech Police, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, continue to investigate both incidents.

They do that at my school. At least for the dorms anyway. Actually most classrooms you need a special card to enter, and the doors lock from the inside.

He had to have either swiped his card (aka lived in WAJ) or followed someone else into the dorm. The dorms are not open until 10am.

we have the luxury in this society of prety much never being in a life threatening situation....so if you're a college kid going through your everyday life, and suddenly faced with this, who knows how you'd react. Considering the vast majority of people usually do the same thing, just freeze and hope you don't get f'in shot, that's probably what you and I would do too.

You're absolutely right about the freezing thing, though I guess I am a bit of a unique case since I have some knife/gun unarmed combat training. I did say I do not want to speak ill of those students and they are definitely victims and in no way cowards or anything.

But I have never been in that situation of course, so I do not know what I would do. I imagine I would be scared out of my mind, would pray to survive... but I like to think that if I had half a second I'd snap out of being frozen, figure I was dead anyway and try to stop the guy.

Apparently they were fighting in the dorms at 7am and an RA told them to keep it down so he shot the RA. He didn't shoot his girlfriend during that instance. If she didn't go to police and she got away they should fucking fry her ass. This was posted by a VT student on another message board.

As far as getting into the dorms just follow someone with a card that's what I used to do when I dated a dorm slut.

And I wonder how many times people let others into the dorms because they knock on the doors. Security cards don't tend to work in my experience.

The word is that he and his gf were having a fight, a RA tried to intervene and he killed both of them, then went and shot up his 1st hour class.........

However, that doesn't make sense if it was 2 hours between the shootings, he locked the doors etc..

Christ it's like a giant game of telephone. By the end of the day he'll be on PCP, raped his girlfriend, shot his gay lover and then something about purple monkey dishwasher.

i know it is tough to face, but the reality of this is that if some nutjob wants to shoot up a bunch fo people in a normal and functioning society, it really isn't preventable. This kind of stuff is really quite easy, the hard part is mustering up the will/insanity to do it, not the execution. There really aren't any security measures which can be put in place, short of massively violating everyone's civil liberties

There is a huge problem with the 2 hours of nothing that occured between shootings. How are classes in session after a shooting with no gunman in custody?

Do they not have SWAT prepared for scenarios like this? Because this would seem like something to be prepared for.

maybe if VT was in Richmond or DC. Roanoke City Police probably could have responded better but they are 30 min away traveling at top speed from VT. They would be the best equipped and experienced people in the area to handle this. The state police could respond but they aren't equipped like SWAT. Between Roanoke and New River areas there are maybe 300,000 people. The rest is rural. We don't have to deal with major crime.

Due to the size of Virginia Tech, you would need nearly 500 people to really start locking down the campus if you wanted to go building to building. The only way we could get that type of police force in the area would be to either get all the local police from the counties there or call up the National Guard. It's not like SW VA has a heavy State Police concentration.

It would not have been hard to follow somebody else into the dorm. People do that all the time...
