Win 98 Defrag/Scandisk issues

I've never heard or seen any problem like this. This person I know has Win 98 and the bare minimums for everything and she doesn't really need anything new (although it would help). anyways she's having an issue with Scandisk and Defrag where it gets to a certain point of scanning or defragging and it restarts.

The system resources show ~77% free i just can't figure out what's making it restart over and over.

she's complaining of the computer running slowly lately and i tried to convince her to buy a new one (even it it is from Wal-Mart) but she doesn't want to right now.

still, does TW have any ideas?

UBCD for Windows (http://www.ubcd4win.com/)

Had that happen back in the day. Bad hard drive was the cause. Boot UBCD, figure out what brand drive she has, and scan it with the proper util.

Otherwise, the only other thing that will cause it to restart a bunch is an application writing files that the defrag utility is currently defragging. Boot it up in safe mode then defrag.

I tried to scandisk in safe mode (don't remember if i tried defragging) and i kept getting an error that windows or another application was writing at the same time.

this is starting to piss me off

I assume that you've made sure there's no antivirus or other needless app running.

I'm gonna have to agree with the possible bad drive. Go to her hard drive manufacturer's website and download their scan utility. Copy to floppy and boot to it to check.

The windows utility in Win98 was garbage in terms of any file access, or paging to the HDD would cause it to restart.

This defrag utility will schedule the defrag to happen when the system is restarted:
ScanDefrag - Blue Orb Software (http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html)

I also have to give the obligatory Win98 is turning 10 next year, is no longer recieving security updates, and should not be connected to the internet.

if she has a broadband connection have here disconnect the pc from her modem or router. a ping response is enough to restart scandisk or defrag on win 98.

/me bangs head on table.

You DOWNLOAD the ISO IMAGE and BURN it to a CD. Then you BOOT from the CD and you select HARD DRIVE UTILS, then DIAG UTILS, then the utility for your drive. If you don't know your hard drive manufacturer, then pull the drive and have a look or use hwinfo32 (google it, use the NT version anyway, you will thank me).

Windows 98 is required in no way to run UBCD; it runs like a linux livecd.
