GameDaily BIZ: But don't you feel pressure from the realities of the market and people who maybe don't want to spend $600? Do you feel there is pressure to drop the price this year?
Phil Harrison(Sony): Absolutely no pressure at all. I think that the reality of the market is that there's a great deal of software people want to buy, there's a great deal of software coming that will stimulate further activity in the market. We're very comfortable with the plan.

Actually, in another article, a Sony spokesman says that there will likely be no price drop within the next two years.
"Although analysts say price reductions would benefit PS3 sales, Sony isn't likely to make any price cuts for at least another two years, said Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America. She noted a similar time frame for lowered prices for the PS2. "We probably expect the same for PS3," Otzman said, adding that while the console's price is higher than competitors', it comes completely packaged so consumers don't have to buy extra equipment or attachments." Meanwhile, Sony has said it is looking into expanding into music and movie downloads via the PS3, which comes equipped with the new high-definition DVD format - called Blu-ray".

I've lost all hope in Sony...
The price of technology is supposed to drop as technology gets better.
But they have to go and utilize a bunch of BS overpriced technology that hardly makes a difference in the machine's performance.

Typical intelligence of a sony basher.
None of the technology is 'overpriced' like you said. If that were the case, sony wouldn't be losing money on every console sold.
And no shit there's not going to be any price drop. The console only just came out.
While at first it appears Sony is simply being greedy, and really believes there is more demand for their product than external observers can find, I think Sony's real price issue is that they can't sell it for much cheaper without incurring losses.

Actually they're already losing about $244.00 on the $499 PS3 per unit, and $204.00 on the $599 PS3 per unit. I may have those loss numbers reversed, but regardless, losing over $200 per unit equals a shitload of money.
XBox360 loses money on the sale of each unit too. The consoles have pretty much always lost money on per unit sales within the first year they launch in the hopes they will make it up on software sales and licensing fees. Losing over $200 per unit though is a staggering amount of money though.
If Sony sold 244,000 units in January - We'll take just $204 per loss X 244,000 = $49,776,000 they lost in January alone on hardware sales. On average new console owners buy 1.5 games at the same time they first purchase a new console, and this isn't enough to offset these kind of losses.
