The "emotion engine" chip that powered the PS2 and provided the PS3 with near 100% backwards compatibility will not be seen in the European release of the PS3.rnIn a statement released today, Sony said that the European systems will utilize "a new hardware specification," and Sony won't "concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility." Rather, they are "increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."rnIn other words, the system is too expensive and they are looking at ways to cut down the price their costs. Looks like european backwards compatibility got hit for massive damage!

I'd imagine this will make its way into NA/JP PS3s sooner rather than later.

"not concentrating" and completely abandoning are 2 different things....perhaps they already have a software emulator for the PS2 in the works and it will be released in a later firmware. If the cell processors are as powerful as they lead everyone to believe, i don't see this as being a problem :).

They've announced over 1,000 PS2 games will be supported with the software emulation they've provided. Also the ability to upscale PS2 games is a possibility with the software emulator. Rumors are flying that they'll push the software emulator live to all PS3 consoles and disable the emotion chips.
