Calamari 02-14-2007, 10:03 AM [So], my friend and I just got back into WoW. We've both got level 60's, and we're cruising along in Outland. But, we also want to check out some of the new content.
Now, he's rolled a BE lock, and I created a Rogue. Then I realized that while being great for a PvP server, Rogues are useless for the end game (whenever we get there). So, I want to make a new character before we get too far along.
My main is a priest, and my friend is a lock, so I don't want to play another squishy caster class. That leaves me with a hunter or a pally. I've played a hunter up to level 30 or so, and I had a good time. Plenty of DPS, good for PvP, and I didn't generally have any issues finding a group. But, I'm open to new things, and was wondering if Paladins are still hella boring to play. I've never played a paladin, because when I tried one out (back around 1.11), they were incredibly tiresome to play. No DPS, no range, mediocre healing, etc.
So, do paladins still suck? Are they still just gimp healers who can soak up more damage?
Lord Elessar 02-14-2007, 10:24 AM state of paladins:
proc- can and has tanked through karazhan and parts of gruul's lair. having same problems as warrios with getting heals in gruul's. that encounter seems made for a feral tank (not that there's anything wrong with that).
holy- healing itemization no longer consists of a few blues and tier 3. They really made +healing plate nice. you can also get some good +damage plate now if you want to play a shockadin. 40/0/21 and healadin varients of a 47/14/0 build for raid healing + kings + ImpRF taken for potential trash AE tanking if the raid leader goes that way. also nice to have in pvp for damage reduction.
ret- still mainly a pvp spec. the CS nerf sucks a bit for pve because one miss means every judgement drops. the vengeance nerf means outside of 25 man or tight guild runs you probably would rather have a class that can do heavier damage and offer some crowd control because the extra stuff ret paladins bring just isn't needed. many still use heavy AP/str/crit gear (white damage from 2handers and vengeance. SoC is also melee crit based) with just a bit of spell power (for CS and JoC). You can drop back and heal with ret fine if you are wearing the gear. You just won't last as long as a holydin. CS and Vengeance nerfs pre TBC for pvp reasons seem a little heavy handed now as Paladins aren't bursting people down due to heavy stam gear on the new items. The tree could use some love but doesn't need too much more help.
Cliffs:
Paladins are better than they were in 2 trees but are still hurting in ret.
Fartypants 02-14-2007, 11:22 AM if you want to heal forever without running out of mana, laugh while you bof people, basically be immune to polymorph and resist the shit/trinket out of almost all cc, and never die then yes
if you want to hit shit with a hammer no
Lord Elessar 02-14-2007, 12:05 PM why polymorph a paladin when you can 4 shot him? frost bolt, frost bolt, cs the heal, frost bolt, frost bolt, dead paladin. insert ice lance if needed. spellsteal BoF and watch them cry as you kite them to death.

ice lance is the shit
it made my mage like 9283x more fun
DeadlyRabbit 02-14-2007, 01:48 PM I am having a lot of fun healing with my 64 paly, even with very basic outlands quest gear I have about 500+ to healing, I had pretty much no healing gear before BC came out (I was 59).
The part about no needing to mana up is crazy with the paly, guildmate wanted to kill the first boss in Blood Furnace so went to help heal the team all level 60-63, I had to sit down twice to drink. With holy spec it is common to have your mana only drop below 85% when the team is fighting a boss or pulls more than one group.
As a holy spec there is no way I can main tank right now unless it is against undead, I can still off tank without a problem though.
That being said I do find the soloing very slow, I surf the web while fighting just to kill time, check back heal go back to surfing. Of course I have a 70 mage so of course the paly is going to seem slow to kill crap.
I found I was a good primary tank with the Holy spec paly up until Uldaman, then I had problems keeping aggro, if I wanted to main tank it would take a very competent group of people that would have to hold a bit to make sure I didn't lose aggro.
Feannag 02-14-2007, 02:24 PM Hell I play a BE pally and even at 19 he's stupid as shit to quest. Went ret-spec with a 2Her and it's pretty retarded out easy you can take mobs down. If I get one crit with the usual Seal/Judge combo you can usually kill things your level in less than 4 swings.
I'm still trying to get him to lvl 20, I'm curious to see how they play out that "Fist if Verigan" quest at 20. The lore behind the lvl 12 or 14 rez spell was just funny.

paladins are at their best solo and all good pvp is 1v1 i promise

You're bad if you get CSed by a mage and die because of it 1v1

pallies are cool. you can do whatever you want with the class really. I had a warrior and since switching to a pally i will never go back. CC is everywhere in this game so being able to get around that makes it so much more fun for me. I play it like a warrior and i think i do a pretty good job. Reckoning+Vengence+Seal of Blood = dead people. should be fun, im going to try and get a Gladiator's Painsaw but I dont really know how hard thats going to be. Should be domination after that though.

I can tell that you are absolutely terrible

we're talking about real mages that are geared with crazy amounts of spell power. not lowbie twinks or some dude's alt. A well played frost mage is one of the most powerful pvp or pve characters in the game.
as far as the 1v1 goes, I'm not sure where you dumb shits got that from as there was nothing in my post about 1v1.
Calder I can tell you are absolutely terrible! (OMG SEE WHAT I DID THERE?)

Learn to stop running after them like a retard and use LoS or range. You should be able to last more than 20 seconds against a good mage, if you don't manage to outlast him and then just pew him down.
But are we talking a shitty ret paladin here trying to zomg crit or what

Since Calder has challenged my WoW manhood, I'll explain my elite paladin skills.
First off, I use every cooldown when its up, and if its a druid or anouther pally, I may bubble 2 to 3 times in a fight. I have both the bubble cooldown reducing talents, and I have no problems using them as much as possible.
I have Reckoning which is 2 cool for school. It goes off quite a bit in pvp. And since Im leveling there are plenty of mobs to aggro on purpose for a few extra procs when someone tries to jump me.
And finally, and the one thing that bothers me the most, I use Seal of Righteousness. Even though I have SoC, I only use it to judge on stunned targets. Righteousness is BRUTAL with a 2her and Reckoning. Im only 62, but when I get Seal of Blood, Im pretty sure its going to be the coolest thing in the world.
Pallies are awesome, but dont tell anyone. Im afraid we will get nurfed.
P.S. 45 second cooldown on HoJ. And I'll have Repentance when I get more points. Stunlocker in plate lol.
Smaqaho 02-14-2007, 05:14 PM I've been shadow specced the majority of TBC and a paladin in my group with VT and VE allows them to basically spam heals forever without any worries of mana whatsoever.
While I prefer to off-heal with another priest, paladins are great. And holy shit Blessing of Kings is so imba. It's almost like popping a flask of titans without farming the mats, alliance had it easy for far too long and it's nice having some easymode on our side now :P
A couple days ago a heal-specced paladin in the guild tanked all of shadow labs for us because we couldn't find another tank and it was actually pretty damn nice. Aside from having to give him a few seconds to lock aggro before we unloaded on bosses it was nice.

Pay no attention to Calder, he doesn't contribute anything.
Bucko 02-14-2007, 07:33 PM i love my pally, healbot ftw.
i'm at 1155 unbuffed bonus healing o_O

I love tanking for shadow priests. VE and VT = ownage. I like resto druid/SP support the best. Max buffage rocks. Kings is just now starting to shine. It was pretty good for the extra health on the MT (ever bit counts!) but other than that some of the other buffs were better. Now that itemization has gotten insane due to the new level cap, the scaling power of kings is starting to shine, shine, shine!
Got Haggis? 02-15-2007, 03:33 PM post on wow forums from an alliance guy complaining about pallys
