WoW performance on Vista?

I needed to reformat, so figured i'd give Vista a try.

It's sexy. Was loving vista until i decided to give WoW a run. UNPLAYABLE. Like 15-22 fps in Wetlands. Wheni usually would get like 50+ everywhere. And it's not like my system is that horrible (got a 3.7 on the vista rating). 2.5ghz P4, 1g ram, 6800gt, etc. Point being though that it ran fine on XP, even with mods galore. I won't even try WoW on vista with bar mods and unit frame mods.

So anyone else having trouble getting WoW to run well on Vista? Or any optimization tips? I'll probably be formatting back to Xp tonight if i don't find any ways to improve framerate. Oh and i have the Aero style turned off even.

On a c2duo system with 7900gs vid card and 2gb ram -- it dropped my fps by about 20. You should really get another gig of ram though...

i have a 7900, 2gb ram and amd 4200

running windows vista 64-bit

i seem to average around 35 fps inside, but almost 20 fps outside at tiems, but yes sometimes it drops down to 10. i'm guessing this is a video driver issue, since nvidia has gone the ATI route of writing sucky drivers. although this time around ati has the better drivers for vista.

btw read this thread

thanks

looks like i'll just be holding off on vista till my next big computer upgrade, and grab a dx10 card at that time too probably.

I was used to 40+ FPS outside/in combat. So there is no way i'm going to get used to sub 25 fps :(

So does that link mean you can turn the sound off and have WoW play just fine?

Yeah, I think I'll be uninstalling Vista this weekend and going back to XP x64.

My framerate in Eversong is 20-30, which is shit based on my system. Only part that sucks is that now I have to re-install WoW. GRRROOOAAAN.

Depends on your video card/video card drivers more than anything else. Buddy of mine put Vista on his Alienware laptop. At first he was dealing with the 15-20 fps you're mentioning above.

A little patience for the new video drivers and he's now back to 60-ish fps running full details on the same box and Vista.

Use the Microsoft.com Vista checker too; you might uncover some incompatibilities.

are we talking about 32bit or 64bit vista? ill gladly "upgrade" but only to 64bit and only if the performance will be close to my current performance.

i'm running 64-bit vista and my fps dropped...usually i average around 45-50, now i'm averaging around 25 - may be due to sound drivers though.

the new nvidia drivers (100.59 i think they are) greatly improved performance for me in WoW. I thought I had the newest before, but I didn't...these were released 1/31/07. seem to mainly be averaging around 45-50 fps, with the occasional drop into the upper 20's.

Most of the problems I had were with the audio causing dropped fps..

I have an X-FI Fatal1ty, used their beta drivers, was having no luck (even with alchemy).. it was very very choppy, like 15 fps but it felt even worse.

I swapped to my AC'97 realtek onboard, vista intsalled the default drivers and wow was smooth as glass, maybe 5-10% slower depending on the area but all in all very playable.

I decided to renable to the x-fi, and i added Set Soundoutputsystem "-1" (or soundoutputsomething) so it would redetect the default system. I also used the creative alchemy project and "transmuted" the world of warcraft install. WoW ran much better, about 10-15% less than XP and no scratches (I had to turn down number of channels in the audio tab to min) or fps issues. A little lower fps than xp in the real churners like Zangarmarsh but very playable.

Unfortunatel, every other game I've tried is ultra choppy (supreme commander, sid meier's railroads, defcon, flatout2) with the x-fi but smooth (albeit no 3d effects) with the realtek..

Seems to me creative has some big problems with their driver

(I also think it may have something to do with my nforce3 board and the default nvidia sata drivers- they seem to work but disk performance feels a bit slow.. Maybe they aren't sharing the bus nicely *shrug*)

Hrm, just noticed that Nvidia released real Nforce4 drivers 2 days ago for Vista. I'll have to check it out and see if I get any increase in performance with the new ones.
