WoW newbie is still playing

I asked about this game about 6 months ago and I did pick it up and it's been fun.

My main guy is a troll shaman @ 54 right now. The quest for goodies has kept me pretty happy, but I miss the days of games like Tribes 1 where you felt like skill mattered alot.

Since some of you were T1 players, who've played one of the best skill-based multiplayer games of all time imho, what's the allure of WoW?

How do you satify your taste for fair (thx to blizz on anti-cheat!!!) and competetive gaming with WoW?

The PvP stuff's been fun and it's a great thing to do in between quests and dungeons, but it feel like a games of stats vs stats unless it's 1 vs 1 and a lvl diff of +3-4.

So many tribes people got sucked into MMORPGs long ago, so what's the deal? How does someone go from skill-based twitch and awarenesss games to something like WoW and come back for more?

It's still fun to me, but maybe people can open my eyes to different aspects of the game that would make it REALLY fun??

Some people like gear superiority. They like to gank and fight people who have little chance of holding their own in a fight. And yet some people like the PvE challenges and social atmosphere of a guild. And others are as Slobax said, but those people are quite rare. I doubt anyone would just load up on green and enter BGs to see if they can take someone in blues/purples.

The game really comes down to who gets the jump on whom, and who has the most purples. WoW takes almost no skill at all, for both PvE and PvP.

in good group pvp there's quite a bit of strategy, but talking 1v1 it's basically trash.

strategy is a great word for it. not skill though. its strategy and quick thinking (in 5v5 pvp)

arena wise it's all about strategy and a little skill too. 1v1, be it world pvp or bg (if you ever actually finish a 1v1 fight in a bg without 4 people "helping") is just pure skill. people who are in all epics and shit have a lot more room to suck and still win. people that actually know what they are doing can beat those people. but a good player in the best gear... forget about it.

Pretty much that's how it is on PvP servers. People will talk about "world PvP" back in the day but that was simply for the most part just attacking each other's towns. Tarren Mill/Southshore of particular note, but with the honor system(s) and BGs and world PvP objectives there's less emphasis to roll PvP unless you like to gank and you can tolerate being ganked for 70 levels. Hell even the battlegroup links shift reliance on locla server population to supply games now so having an off Alliance to Horde ratio isn't an issue. Even then you have to PvE (raid) to get the gear to allow you to beat down other players without much effort.

So given that, your choice pretty much boils down to if you want to bully other people and can tolerate other people's bullying before you can be one yourself.

Pretty much. Big differene between good PvP and ganking and griefing. 2 PvP 60s on both sides and I got sick of it.

I meant more like, not using purples as a crutch - rather than intentionally downgearing so you can feel more pride killing someone with raid gear. (both sound fun though)

i just meant - you can tell the skilled pvp'er who knows his class and the shitty sweaty nerd who just raids 8 hours a night to get stat increases (note: not saying you can't be both. there are good raiders who pvp, and vice versa)

Well as for "fari and competitive" gaming in WoW you'd most likely have to join a PvP guild who both raids and plays BGs. Need to raid to get reasonable gear, you could use the PvP sets but you'd lose a bit of flexibility raid gear provides. Only way I can think of to make it "fair and competitive" anyway.
