I read the stickied thread.. Just so you don't say, "READ THE THREAD MEBER"

Anyways any help is appreciated, here is my problem:

I'm trying to set up a linksys wireless-g router to go along with my existing DSL connection.(The DSL modem being a Westell 6100.[Doubles as a router, apparently.. ?]) so it goes: Internet --> Dsl modem --> router --> computer

I ran the installation CD for the router, it asked me to keep my modem plugged in while it tests for my internet connection.(O.K.) Then it tells me to set up the router so my modem is connected to it and the router is connected to the PC. Did that, and it tests my connection. It tells me it can't connect to the router, to check the setup or reset the router(did that). Everything is set up how it should be, so no idea what's going on with that ...

I tried to skip the CD. I set up everything, rebooted, and I can't access the web panel for either router.(Typing 192.168.1.1 in my browser says server cannot be found) the TCI/IP settings are set to obtain automatically.. do I have to manually enter any kind of settings? Usually I can figure this kind of stuff out on my own by googling or problem solving but I don't know what to do =\

I also plan to hook up a USB wireless G adapter to a second computer I have.

help!

Meh, I don't know what your exact problem is. I can usually figure out this kinda stuff if I'm at the hardware though. ;) Anyways, start->run->cmd type ipconfig /all and paste what it says with the router hooked up.

What are you trying to do exactly? Because at the moment, you're trying to use two routers (one behind another) which isn't going to work without a lot of tweaking and configuration and you really shouldn't be doing that anyway without a good reason to.

It sounds to me like you want to add wireless capability to your network?

You have to disable routing on ONE of the devices. For simplicity, I would disable it on your Linksys router. Look for the option that allows you to set the connection type, and disable the connection. This should basically turn your Linksys router into a switch with wireless ability, which is what you want. Then all the routing will be handled by your Westell.

However, if you want to take the time to do it, I would suggest setting up the Linksys as your router, and instead set the Westell 6100 to Bridge mode. This requires a bit more work. You have to input the login/connection options into your Linksys router (DSL is usually PPPoE). I suggest taking the time to do it this way though because chances are your Linksys has more routing options and features available should you need it in the future.

P.S. To access the configuration pages, you should disconnect one of the devices for the time being and then navigate to the 192.168.1.1 page. Then configure one of them to have an address of 192.168.1.2 instead so that they don't conflict with each other. THEN you can have both devices on the same network again and access both their pages.

Basically, i'm trying to get my internet to another computer. My brother gave me a linksys wireless-g router so i can do that.

my connection is DHCP, it doesn't use PPPoE as far as I know.
"DHCP Results DHCP Server Discovered
PPPoE Results PPPoE Server Not Present" - modem says that

I tried to disable the connection on the linksys, no dice.

Verizon told me the westell needs to be in bridge mode, with both protocol and mode in bridge.(This is the default anyway, excect mode is Routed Bridge) but it still wont work. Tried Cloning the mac address also

That's strange. I've never seen Verizon DSL do DHCP. They're almost always PPPoE. Anyway, change the settings on that page to Bridge mode (instead of Routed Bridge) and disable the DHCP client. Then connect the Linksys router, set the connection type to Automatic or DHCP and see what happens.

Yeah I did that also, no luck
im not getting a dns or dhcp IP

Hrm, very weird. I'll get back to you on this. I have a Westell 6100 in my other house and I'll check out the config page to see what's up.

Doh, yep, the settings are all PPPoE on my end. Hrmm... did you disable the DHCP under Config->DHCP Config? And also under Config->Private Lan?

yes :)

So just to doublecheck, you have the Westell set to bridge mode, and the Linksys set to with DHCP as the connection type?

Are you able to access the individual config pages of each of the routers when they're both connected to each other? So you're going to say http://192.168.1.1 for the Westell and http://192.168.1.2 for the Linksys?

Yep, that's how it was set up.

No, I can't access the westell. I can access the linksys however

Did you assign them the different IPs?

edit: No wait, I just realized it's not supposed to work that way, never mind. Yeah, you're not supposed to be able to access the Westell config.

So you have the telephone line going into the Westell, which is set to bridging, and a single network cable from the Westell going to the port labeled 'Internet' on the Linksys, right?

Alternatively, you can try this: change the Westell's settings back to the routed bridge mode and DHCP and all that.

Configure the Linksys router to "none" for the connection type, and disable its DHCP for the LAN. Give it a static IP of 192.168.1.2 (or whatever the Westell isn't using)

Then hook up a network cable from the Westell to port 1 (or any of the others that are NOT labeled Internet) on your Linksys.

This will make your Westell the router, and the Linksys merely a wireless switch. Just curious if this will work for you because it should.

Yes. =)

edit for 2nd post: So I wouldn't be able to hook up linksys to my computer to get internet with that setup? I only have one wireless adapter =\

edit for 2nd post: So I wouldn't be able to hook up linksys to my computer to get internet with that setup? I only have one wireless adapter =\Sure you can. I'm just trying different things to hopefully develop clues about why this isn't working. If you set it up the second way, your Linksys becomes a wireless/wired switch and the Westell does the routing like it always used to. You should be able to plug regular network devices into the Linksys and also connect to it via wireless.

Ok, I hooked up my westell so it's in the port 1 slot of the linksys(not internet) and my linksys is going from port 2 to my computer. That's how it is set up now and im on the interweb. I didn't configure anything in the westell or linksys...

So I should be able to set up wireless now and have my adapter pick the signal up on the other computer? and 192.168.1.1 brings up the westell

ok.. it WAS on the internet, but i rebooted and hooked up the linksys solo so i can get to its config, and havent been able to get it back since

Hey, just wanted to check back in. I resolved the problem.. I set the westell to bridge mode under VC config(both mode and protocol) And I turned the DHCP off under private LAN. I then set the linksys up to Static IP and entered the information in the screenshot from the 4th post in the thread. It works! +P Thanks for your help invar!

edit: No wait, I just realized it's not supposed to work that way, never mind. Yeah, you're not supposed to be able to access the Westell config. It's possible but you have to have the Linksys on a different subnet from the Westell.
