red_hex 11-03-2006, 05:50 PM I'd like to say to the devs that this thread meant a lot to me, after so long, and to thank them for taking part. Not to sound like a fag, which I know I do, but I genuinely sat back and had to stifle a tear. I wish you all well. Thankyou for everything you did and the greatest games I have ever played online to this day.
Also, I'd like to point out how reasonable everyone has been. Some people have said it's because we don't care anymore, and I think that's dead wrong. If we didn't care, we'd have rode in and shredded everybody and everything for amusement. It's precisely because we care that it's civilised and mature - lending the gravity the moment deserves.
I was linked here from Wired's Game|Life, if you didn't know you'd got an article mention. Surprised to find my account not culled for the second time.
Wulfen 11-03-2006, 06:42 PM Some of the other more interesting items I found when we moved were also a few unopened copies of the Starsiege boardgame that came out, a whole bunch of old starsiege and tribes hats, even some Starseige velcro/metal wristwatches. All dead of course, but I put all of it in safe keeping. It was wierd, like some time capsule or something opened up when we moved.
Ok, I want that boardgame, like, right NOW. I always wanted to check that and also the miniatures game that was put out.
]{ane 11-03-2006, 09:02 PM Wow, I just spent the last 3 hours reading every post in this thread. Great reading, better memories. :classic:
Man I should find out if it's cool / legal to show off the original design document for FEAR (the original name of Tribes, before it was switched to Tribes, and was solely single-player). Bioderms, all kinds of crazy stuff. That design doc was like 5 lbs and had 300+ pages of history. Truly crazy stuff. I have all the old design docs dating back to the mid 90s for that stuff courtesy of the old Dynamix guys (actually we have original TIM art, all kinds of stuff from the older games). None of this stuff is in digital form though.
I would love to read this. You HAVE to try to release this.

Thrax, Marweas, Qix, any of you guys interested in making a new game?
Watch this vid to see an awesome T2 mod.

I think KP made a game way ahead of it's time. Do you think FPS team sport games like this have a future?
Reading this thread literally brings tears to my eyes. :(
I would like to thank the weasel, thrax, qix and all other other guys for making games i enjoyed for a long time.
It's just sad that T:V was never given a real chance to begin with.
Much <3 guys.
Tribes is dead, but it'll remain in my heart forever <3

Colosus 11-04-2006, 12:46 AM I won the Starsiege board game in a Tribes trivia contest done on Tribes Players a long ass time ago. It took Analog Kid like 6 months to send me the prize. I then gave it away at TribesCon 2000

?B-MAN 11-04-2006, 12:51 AM Holy crap what a thread. Wow.
TV could have been improved just like T2 was improved with classic. But I would have to say that an improved TV would still be inferior to the impact that classic had on T2. I'm just biased towards torque. The engine was built with Tribes in mind and its so obvious when you play TV.
There are those that love classic man on man and those that loved tactical play in Tribes. In my opinion, TV is too bland to offer so many dimensions of gameplay that you could muster with either T1 or T2. Additionally the old unreal engine was pretty, but had obvious limitations.
Still at least Marweas tried. I totally understand how hands can be tied in a managed corporate environement.
I just find it sad that years later we are starting to see a lot of big name titles (BF 2142, Halo, Quake) moving more in the direction of Tribes like gameplay. Reading over at Bluesnews lately a lot of the folks are directly comparing Battlefield 2142 Titan mode with Tribes. I though Id never see the day when the Quake franchise would push an open terrain game and now we have Quake Wars, but at least SplashDamage has a love for gaming, they are gamers and some of them played Tribes competitively.
As Paul Wedgewood mentioned during one of his many interviews regarding questions about making the Quake Wars newbie friendly:
"You should never constrain gameplay because you feel like you have to please someone new thats coming in because ultimately their will be no longevity to the game"
Wish that same attitude went into making Tribes 3.
@ Qix: Thanks for Tribes 2, I personally loved it after the classic fix. The vehicles, interface etc rocked. And thanks for admitting to the mistake for making the "mass appeal" physics changes. No offense to Thrax, but after reading through the posts, I'd rather Qix be involved in making a Tribes game anyday over Thrax. Madden Tribes oh my god.
Working around the beauty of the jetpack without being obvious.
1. Halo 3 The Man cannon
2. BF 2142 Launch Pod
3. Quake Wars The Icarus
Arclight 11-04-2006, 02:08 AM I really would like to know more about what was planned for FEAR and what was planned for TRIBES: Extreme.
Judging by the released T:E maps, it seems like development was geared more towards the original idea of TRIBES (that slower-paced, tactical, squad-based combat game as seen in the original demos of the devs playing) versus the fast-paced game it became. I'm not sure which maps were meant for singleplayer and which were meant for multiplayer but I don't remember any of them looking like they were competition/pub friendly.
Speaking of the included demos of the devs playing, when were those recorded? I remember starting the game for the first time and stumbling onto those things and being amazed. Seeing heavies load up into an HPC, fly over to the enemy base and mortar it from the air was just entirely different than anything else at the time. If that fanfic story in the manual didn't get me hooked, watching those demos certainly did.
GB.Arkady 11-04-2006, 07:04 AM Just spent half my all-night shift reading on this thread while working. Dayummmm what a nostalgia rush.
Qix, Marweas,Menzo,SecretSquir rel, Thrax, the guys from GG and from IG that all came down to share withus, I salute you all for your efforts on the different aspects of the Tribes franchise, still the best damn games i've ever played.
Hell, if I ever win like the lottery or something then I might have to be in contact with y'all about throwing dev money your way or something :) (And I just might do it.)
Daizo 11-04-2006, 10:23 AM This thread is like finally getting over a bad divorce....Thanks to all the devs who made this possible.

Durak 11-04-2006, 11:36 AM From what I heard they didn't have enough time to work the kinks out of the contact physics and going hover was a quick fix.
Quick fix is right. The hover wasn't 100% reliable, especially the grav cycle. You'd go over small bumps and explode or sometimes it would just get stuck if you crashed in to something too hard. Other times it bounce like 30 meters up and down if you go over a hill fast enough. I also think it caused UE's for a while because I would always get them when I was in a tank.
Brasstax 11-04-2006, 12:27 PM TR2 was a really fun mod. I enjoyed ladder play while it existed briefly.
