GG actually did want to do another Tribes game and we were deep in talks about it with Sierra (this is way back). The end result of that discussion actually ended up only being the final T2 patch. Too bad, too, cuz it was going to rock :).
Bummer :(
Effective 11-02-2006, 08:08 PM Also, it's fun picture time. Mullets never go out of style:

Those guys are some of the biggest nerds I've ever seen.
No wonder Tribes was such a great fucking game.
Celios 11-02-2006, 08:10 PM Oh yeah...and I really liked the "Siege" game mode that we added, even if it was always a minority-share game.

You'll be glad to know a pretty rabid and sizable community grew out of Siege. It may not have been up to CTF in popularity, but it was still an easy 2nd.
Santa 11-02-2006, 08:10 PM BF2142 has alot of Tribes stuff: Deployable Turrets, Floating Tanks, Deployable Sensors, Transport, 2 man gunships.
If I were to make another Tribes it would be a artistic and elegant.
Alexander 11-02-2006, 08:10 PM I think at times that the biggest mistake we made was trying to work with the community at all. We made a commitment to try to keep you guys in the loop as much as possible, and for the most part it went well, but some people gave us nothing but grief for it.
I don't do that anymore. It's 5 screen shots for IGN every month and a heap of silence for the community.
Agreed. You guys weren't listening to the community since the community mostly hung in GD where there were no rules, no boundaries, and no civility. Creating Tribes Talk was a good idea but ultimately it just brought out the most vocal [and often extreme] viewpoints.
and less information = more hype
Dennis 11-02-2006, 08:14 PM someone call the WAAAHHHbulence
Seriously. Who the fuck cares about vehicles? They sure as hell didn't ruin T:V. The physics were shit and no one ever asked for a grappling gun. All we ever wanted is Tribes1 with better graphics. Here you have arguably the greatest multiplayer game ever created and all you think about is, "hmm, what can we change here?"

Shut your ugly fucking mouth member faggot.
How dare you talk like that to Thrax you fucking cuntstain.
Effective 11-02-2006, 08:15 PM Completely misleading everytime someone brings this up. T2 ONLY got huge sales because of the incredible buildup and momentum from Tribes (and all the commercial, enthusiasm thereof). Had it been released first who knows what it's impact would have been but definitely not as good as it did.
That said I enjoyed it well enough because I never had UE problems. Base++ was a step in the right direction and classic was the best "base" version.
TR2 still owns.
I still think Tribes 1 would have sold far more than any of them had it not been so easy to copy and distribute illegally. I mean you didnt even need the installer you could just copy the directory to a CD and that was that.
I'll admit I used a copied version for a long long time. Back then that sort of thing was so common place though. Plus I was a broke ass teenager at the time.

??? The grapple came from community suggestions afair.
Arjay 11-02-2006, 08:17 PM Here's an interesting question. Would Tribes 2 or T:V ever have been green-lit if it was T1 with shiny new graphics? I'm going to venture a 'no'.
Arjay 11-02-2006, 08:19 PM ??? The grapple came from community suggestions afair.
The grapple was a pretty neat idea on paper. I agree with the 'its not really tribes' faction though. After seeing it used at a high level, it really changes the game too much (IMO).
Effective 11-02-2006, 08:20 PM I would have liked T1 with better graphics.
Really thats what T2 would have been if the physics felt right from the get go.
Everything else was a minor change to me. (even the vehicles)
NoFiX 11-02-2006, 08:26 PM daveg rocks... thanks for t2...
Mooley 11-02-2006, 08:26 PM I agree, with the possible exception of the T2 code. The legalities of ownership of that code are tied up with GG, and I'm not sure if there are sale provisions in the original contracts or not. Anyway, you'd be better off using TorqueX anyway.
The other thing about buying the IP from VUG right now is that they don't need money. That Blizzard printing press is keeping them in the black for the indefinite future, so what incentive do they have to give up an IP right now? Then again, who wouldn't want 2 or 4 million extra cash.
Who would want to keep around a dead franchise they plan to do nothing with? Isn't that enough reason to sell? o.O

Look at System Shock (well now there are plans):\
There are several other IPs that have been in a similar situation that I can't recall atm.
T1 with better graphics is such a cop out. You do not inspire the legions of gamers necessary to keep your franchise alive with that strategy. It is T2 in all its "differentness" that attracted all the new blood and those sales. The people who never played tribes, who never heard of tribes. Who were in no position to be disappointed because something like the ski speed was too slow. They were inspired by what they heard and what they saw and if they could handle crashing they didn't return the game like the other hundreds of thousands of people.
Maker 11-02-2006, 08:30 PM <3 to the devs for posting in this thread

Couldn't have said it any better...

Special suggested it in a number of posts and so they gave it a whirl on the thought that it might level the playing field a bit and give other FPS players a method of movement. I think the version he put forward was a little more like the grappling hook in Q3, though.

You are clearly retarded. Dave G even admitted it and any game created after Tribes1 would sell 500k easily and it's a testament to its shittiness that it didn't sell more. In that sense T2 was a failure because had it been done right it could have done so much better. T:V is undoubetly the largest failure this community has witnessed and the saddest part is they never learned from the mistakes of T2 and the success created by T1.
