Evil Light Bulb 11-02-2006, 04:19 PM I'm not reading and believing there is ever going to be another game in the Tribes series. However, 'the making of' information is fascinating (to me) it's good info to have.
http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=444521 yeah, those guys :]
Devil Slayer 11-02-2006, 04:24 PM Nothing like a dread franchise to change the hearts and minds.
 I'm sure that was a typo, still made me chuckle.
Tribes2 sold like half a million copies didn't it? if they'd have kept QIX on, things would be different, we'd all be sitting in a mansion in a hot tub, soaking it up with our soulmates right now.
 I'm sure that was a typo, still made me chuckle.
wow i didn't see that, not surprising for what I was doing at the time though.
MaDAssassin 11-02-2006, 04:44 PM So does anyone happen to have the number of players playing for release day of Tribes 2? I know it was a pretty big number.

:ugh: I won't ask...
Alexander 11-02-2006, 04:49 PM Qix,
Have you played T:V extensively? If so, what do you think it did better/worse than the others and do you think it would have been possible to turn a Tribes game into a blockbuster beyond #2 [or even profitable]?
(I guess #3 because there was the Playstation 2 version that apparently did ok)
So does anyone happen to have the number of players playing for release day of Tribes 2? I know it was a pretty big number.
No idea about the first day, there were a lot of technical problems at the time. The game's peak came a couple months in during twl's prize ladder. Which was just about 5.5k.
Keeper 11-02-2006, 04:55 PM Gawd damn. It's like everyone grew up or something. Very un-TW-like.
:sunny:
I was thinking the same thing. :D
oh and dotted...
Dennis 11-02-2006, 04:55 PM Did I make mistakes with T2? Yup. I did learn the lesson of "when making a sequel, make it pretty, but don't change the original". Unfortunately, I learned that the hard way. However, I agree with you now.

Wow, just fucking wow. I was one of those people that shelled out and wasted $50 for Tribes2 only later to turn it into a coaster. Now, after 5+ years, FINALLY we get a dev to admit what the biggest mistake of both sequels were. While I appreciate your post and the fact that you had the guts to show up on TW again, myself and the real fan base won't be satisfied until one of two things happen: Tribes Extreme is released with the the same physics from T1 and updated graphics with new maps OR the Tribes1 source code is released. It's a too late to change the mistakes of the past and perhaps without them a game like CS:S would have turned out completely different alienating its fanbase instead of being one of the most succesful multiplayer games of all time.
We here at Tribalwar all know that if there was a true, proper sequel done to the masterpiece that is Tribes1 that not only would it be the greatest multiplayer experience of all time, it would be one of the best selling as well.
Thrax Panda 11-02-2006, 04:56 PM I seem to remember one of you mentioning that IG was the 2nd choice, there was someone else you had tried to court first.IG was our first choice. We rejected everybody that we spoke to before IG. I'm not going to list the companies who got rejected because there is no reason to trash anybody, but suffice it to say that the concepts we got back from other companies were full of things like "We're going to remove the jet packs and make it a high tech world war II squad game" and such.
Thrax Panda 11-02-2006, 04:58 PM well i'm sure torque was an option, since they contacted Garage Games to possibly make Tribes:Vengeance, which GG turned down. No, we didn't contact GG about T:V. There was no need, I knew that GG wasn't interested in doing that sort of work so we never even talked to them.
old_skul 11-02-2006, 05:00 PM I seem to remember posts from GG personnel about how they tried talking with Sierra about T:V but were rebuffed.

that's unlikely from what I heard from GG staff a year or so ago. that said, it wasn't completely firsthand...
i don't think they had the staff or manpower to even think about it, anyway. they were 100% focused on bringing indie games up to the fore and getting their stuff in the xbox live arcade thing, which I would be willing to bet, is making them a shitload of constant income that T:V would have prevented.
Got Haggis? 11-02-2006, 05:04 PM GG have said that they were contacted by Sierra to make a Tribes sequel, but turned it down because they wanted to focus on their engine tech.
perhaps this was after tribes:vengeance, which would seem crazy to me, but who knows.
Jelly 11-02-2006, 05:05 PM So what are you all doing now these days? Are you able to discuss your current projects or working environment?
Dave, Menzo, Thrax?
-[ENIG]ma- 11-02-2006, 05:10 PM Thanks to everyone for answering our questions. It's really a great read.
I have played and loved T1 and T2. I went into T:V kicking and screaming because it was just NOT TRIBES. It's how I felt with T2, but I sticked with it because the developers stuck with it and released multiple patches to fix many issues and the community really came through with all the great competition mods such as B++ and classic. T2 in its current state is one hell of a game, classic mod MADE the game and revitalized the community. I stuck with T:V (earning #1 rung on the ladder under multiple teams) in hopes that there would be patches, lots of competition quality community mods to bring back the tribes feel, and because there just wasn't another FPS out there like tribes.
I knew from the first day that I played T:V (well before any beta was out) that the game was WAY too slow (much slower than T2 base) and small. Most of the community stressed that the single player would eat too many development resources from the multiplayer and regardless of what many of the developers say, this had to have happened. The game was in no shape for competition. Having different bases based on your tribe was nice, but made the game way too unbalanced, mediums with grapple and shield pack swinging in circles were nearly impossible to kill with LD escorts with repair packs, the memory leaks forced us to restart servers between maps, and tournament mode and observer huds were extremely lacking. I don't feel any hate towards the devs, I just wish that it could have been different.
There will never be another game like Tribes and I've finally come to accept that.

i sincerely doubt that. tribes was very much a niche title, and for a best selling, or highly successful game you need to have a bit less of a curve than T1 had, which was basically either you walk around, or you blast across the map and shit. there wasn't a middle ground, and that just cultivates hostility in a community.
Excal 11-02-2006, 05:16 PM As much as I would like to get back into playing Tribes 1 and 2, (yes folks it is possible to like both) I just don't think any Tribes game, no matter how close to the original 2 they are, will be a success.
If a new Tribes game is created and it is done right, it will not have a chance in hell if there is no marketing behind it. The marketing on T:V was piss poor, T2 was almost non-existant, and T1 was even more obscure. There have been too many crappy PC games lately and too many people have moved to consoles, the only way to pull them back to a PC game is to market it like a console game. Actual television commercials in addition to magazine ads and the cheesy MTV stuff. And whoever bribes the "judges" of those spike video game awards shows would need to grease the palms for the Tribes community benefit. Of course before any of this would do any good the game would have to be done right.

Wow. Just. Wow.
Let it go, man. Seriously.
