Ok when i came home yesterday my computer had restarted, and windows wouldn't boot at all. I ran some setup diagnostics and my 1GB of RAM failed a few tests (March test). So i took out the stick and the computer posted normally, but windows wouldn't boot due to a missing C:\WINDOWS\system32\confi g/system.

This is windows XP. Its a shitty dell and i dont have the "setup" (windows) CD. do i just make a boot disk then run the "repair" utility? I think that's what im supposed to do, if so, how do i make a boot disk?

Sounds like your registry is pooched. Get a Windows XP CD and run repair. Or you could find the batch file from Microsoft that replaces the registry within the Recovery Console (that also needs the WinXP CD heh).

I got a perfectly fine working Win98 bootdisk from there, but that was quite some time ago.

I have no clue what to do with a Dell, but it sounds like you may just need to run chkdsk /F C: from the recovery console command prompt. If you can get a regular Windows XP CD, just choose to run the recovery console and enter the administrator password and type in the command.
