Any suggestions on how to do this? My primary hdd was acting sluggish, I randomly restarted, and now it wont boot. I can no longer view the hdd through windows xp. Are there any things I can do to possibly recover my data?

Throw it in a ziploc bag and put it in the freezer for an hour..
Then try it. You might get something off it, if not set your drink on it.

Recently one of my HDD's stopped responding so I used GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm) and recovered the whole drive to one of my other drives. Then I just formatted, did a quick chkdsk and now I'm using the drive again. If there's physical damage it's not a good idea, but all indications for me were that it was just file table corruption.
