don't lose all your chips before everyone else does

my preferred method is to get all of the chips in play

the rest sorts itself out

I usually dont mess around much in early blinds, then I get a little more agressive, I try to still only play reasonable hands, the idiots will knock themselves out, I try to hold off untill I get a real hand, and they will come, and people will make mistakes that even a noob like me can take advantage.
Staying out of the early rounds seems to be the key for me to stick around at the end.

first of all, it totally depends on the buyin amount. i'm gonna assume you mean $20 and below though.

that said, play TAG (emphasis on tight) early to let the idiots knock themselves out. however, if i get TT-AA or AK within the first orbit or so, i will usually just push instead of simply raising -- you'll probably still get a call and maybe two.

seriously, all you have to do is play solid poker and you should be able to cash in the $20's and below easily. just make sure to increase your aggression as the blinds go up, especially when closing in on the bubble. try to put the tough bubble decision on THEM instead of having to make one yourself. if your stack dwindles to around 10xBB, push (not raise) a lot of hands when it's folded to you.

after the bubble, make sure to stay really aggressive *especially* if you have a decent stack. at the <$20 level, if you get in the money as chipleader (or close to it) you really should finish 1st a very high percentage of the time. just raise alot and they'll fold their respective ways to 3rd and 2nd places.

i find the $10+1 5-table sngs on PS are extremely +ev; i can win those things outright a fairly high % of the time. plus, they are great experience if you're trying to learn how to play sngs.

that's about it for basic strategy.

I was at a $5 SnG single table once and one guy knocked out 5 players in the first orbit.

Party Poker has some 6 people sit n goes. I think they're pretty nice for practicing your heads up play.

play partypoker's $530 10 man sit n go's. Be aggressive early and get to around 4k chips, coast and play only solid hands. Do not get involved in hands with the chip leader unless you have a top 10 hand. Key to sit-n-go's in general, play the rocket busters early when you can get in cheap (ie. mid range suited connectors and low pkt pairs)

I dont really know if telling him to move up to the $530 sit n go's are a good idea, considering that he is having problems winning as it is.

i'm definitely at the 5/10 buyins....i'm not really prepared to sit down and spend 20 bucks on a sng yet let alone 530

yes, *especially* if there are limpers/raisers in front. don't bother to raise, just shove if it's early in the sng and hope for a call.

You are leaving a lot of dead money on the table if you do this consistently. Early in the SnG is when you want to use these hands that can take some heat to get all that fish money sitting out there to give you an advantage for the rest of the game. Granted a bigger raise PF is necessary, but dont go overboard, 8-10xBB will suffice, and you know you are up against a serious monster if a RR comes after that.
