Hey guys,
so i just bought a new computer and everything's working fine, except for the microphone, which i want to use for google talk and bf2 and such. This microphone works perfectly well on every other computer i go to, but for some reason mine is screwy. To test it, i opened up google talk and called myself (on a different computer), and i confirmed i got no sound.
I started to mess around in the control panel entry for sounds and audio devices, and in the audio tab i happened upon the microphone's "volume..." button. this opened up a screen with three volume controls- Line in, Rear Mic, and Microphone- each with a check box underneath that functions like a radio button (only one can be checked at a time). "Rear Mic" is checked by default. My computer has a bunch of places to plug in microphones (two pink mic jacks-1 in front 1 in back and a line in jack in the back as well). No matter where i plugged in my mic, it didnt work. I checked the "Microphone" tab just to try it out and lo and behold it worked. I happily closed all the windows and called one of my other friends on google talk- and it stopped working again! I had to go back and reset the check box! In fact, every time i open a new window that accepts mic input, i have to reset this check box, which leads me to believe that it's set there by default, and set to autoupdate by default, which leads me to my question.
How the hell do i set it so that "Microphone" rather than "Rear Mic" is the default input for my mic? I'll include some screenshots for your benefit.

and as i'm not sure exactly what my sound card is, here's a screenie of the sound card entry from the device manager: http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/1867/halp3kp4.jpg
I'm running WinXP Media Center Editon on a 2.73GHz Pentium Core Duo with 2 gigs of RAM (if that helps at all). And it's a Dell. so can you guys help me?
