Maxtor DiamondMax 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Hard Drive in a generic (but sexy and well built) aluminum enclosure.

I bought this three months ago for $120+$20 shipping, it has sat on my desk unused since then. I bought it to use with my desktop system but have been unable to get that son of a biscuit up and running (:disgust:), and I'm broke as dirt right now, so the drive must go.

1 year warranty good through next February.

I've never had an external drive. Is usb2.0 fast enough to play games off of it?

It's just an internal drive in an external enclosure so you can take it around. You can just take it out of the enclosure and put it in your tower.

i'm pretty sure it's possible to run games off this.. usb 2.0 is pretty fast and it has a 16mb cache buffer. can anyone confirm this?

USB 2.0 is capable of 480Mbps (bits, not bytes).

The SATA bus is capable of 1.5Gbps, and SATA II is capable of 3.0Gbps (supporting devices only).

Typical PATA bus speeds cap out around 800Mbps.

So basically, don't expect stellar transfer rates from an external hard drive. This will hurt you most with texture loading.

thanks for that, data.

i will add that external drives are most commonly used for data storage, not running programs.. if you've got lots of legally acquired music, movies, and porn and are running out of space, this should fit the bill. :D

I "stream" video and music off a USB hard drive all the time without any problems.

Ship to Canada?

if you're willing to pay the extra shipping cost, sure. i think $110 shipped would cover it to canada.

If any of you are thinking about running games off an external hard-drive I wouldn't use anything but firewire 800 and that's from experience.

That being said if I needed another external for just files that is one hell of a deal.

I can offer $50, but that's probably not enough ... (and probably pushing what I could really afford right now, new baby and all.) :(

(This is Bounty, btw.)

nothing is wrong with the drive, i tested it on my friend's computer and it works fine. it's my desktop system that i can't get to work, i think the motherboard is dead. :(

and yes i think i will resort to ebay soon.

How's $70 shipped sound? I could really use the extra storage but I, too, am low on cash. The college year just ended and I haven't found a job yet :(
