i havent trained til recently because i didnt have money til now but here's my question.
i trained 5 times in the fighter's guild and i havent advanced at all through them. so when it says im maxed out for this level, im assuming next fighter's guild rank i can train another 5, right? i, however, am finished with mage's guild. so did i miss out on 5 novice training? or will i get 10 trainings? am i fucked?

It has nothing to do with guild rank.
It's like training a skill: blade, blunt, sneak, etc.

You can't train a skill past 100, other than that I'm not aware of any caps.
Note that some trainers will only train you up to a certain level, so if you can't train anymore, it may be that you're past that level and need to find a better trainer. In Morrowind there were only a few trainers that could train you up to 100 skill, and I'm pretty sure Oblivion is the same way.
You might have to look around or check gamefaqs.com to know where the master trainer for your specific skill is.

Yeah there are 3 levels of trainers for each skill, a low skill trainer that goes to 40 (I think?), a mid level one that will take you to 75 (?), and a high level one that will train you to 100.
You can get the names of the low level and some mid-level trainers from NPCs, but the high level trainers (and some mid-level ones) will only be available if you are referred to them by a trainer of a lower level.
