Looks fine, but that's a very poor reason to not go with SATA.

Just install the floppy for the drivers like I did. The only thing I dont like about your set up is 1. the case and 2 the ram. I would stick with aluminum for a case not steel. Steel holds in heat more, and you can find a cheap case for that as well. The ram is bleh. If you just want a gig then go for 512x2. I have a matched pair of 512 at lower timeings and they are duel channel. So if you want 2 gigs later then go ahead and spend the money on matched pair that you know are duel channel.

There is no such thing as dual channel RAM. You simply need matched sticks.

This is a good point though. I didn't notice there was only one stick or I would have said this myself. You definately want two to utilize dual channel.

I said that because you need the matched pair and its best to buy them that way. :) Just said that for the ease of the point. But you are right.

believe it or not, kingston sells packs of 2 sticks that are not dual channel compatible (@ my Circuit City) why? Because people are dumb and don't know anything about the stuff they are buying.

No they don't. There's no such thing as a stick that's not dual channel compatible. There's nothing in the RAM that allows them to work in dual channel. As stated before, it only matters that the sticks match.

thanks for the input sorry for not posting i was at school.

im going with the 1 stick of 1 GB of RAM because i think we are planning on getting another 1GB stick of the same kind later then running that in dual channel

if i get 2 512MB sticks now, then when he wants to max out the comps ram to 4GB he will have 2 512MB sticks lying around.

but if 2 512 sticks in dual Channel is significantly better then 1GB stick i will consider it

MY friend choose that case, and i think it looks cool. I prefer steel cases because in my experience the aluminum cases i've owned were flimsy, though i bet some are better then othersk i will consider it

Well the 2X 512 sticks can run lower timings and be in duel channel mode, and thus makes it better then the 1 gig stick. Make SURE that you get the same stick later or it can have problems running in duel channel.

I could live with the 1 stick of RAM until another one comes in, dpeending on how soon that happens of course.

I would stick with aluminum for a case not steel. Steel holds in heat more, and you can find a cheap case for that as well. This is not true. The material of the case has minimal to no effect on temps. However, steel is heavier, so it will reduce the noise originating from case vibrations.

In any case (no pun intended), I'd go with something that has 120mm fan slots for better and less noisy cooling.

Are you going to use the stock CPU cooler?

yes we are going with stock cooling, maybe upgrade later... i think i read it wasnt obnoxiously noisy. me personally i dont mind noise, i usually got some music playing. ive got a vantec tornado in my comp, volt modded to 7v of course, 12V sounded like a vacuum cleaner

my friend probably would mind if it was really noisy tho

getting sticks that are the same as each other allows you to run it in t1, unmatched sticks do run in dual and t2. ive tested this got 1 stick of 512 kingston and the other samsung 512 and they ran together in dual. just that t1 will speed up your system ie load times etc.. other wise just buy any ram all the new 1s run in dual, i went out and got my ocz 4000 gold 2 gig had to spend the cash.
